La RVF

A well‑ripe, saline character in Lieu (Inter)dit, with a subtle bitterness that signals its mineral presence, and a faint sun‑kissed note on the finish.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

William Kelley

Ripe and generous, the 2022 Saint-Véran Lieu (Inter)dit delivers aromas of pear, waxy citrus fruit, freshly baked bread and sweet stone fruits, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and satiny palate. A little more cut and tension would have stood this cuvée in good stead.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Saint-Véran Village "Lieu (Inter)Dit" 2022 Verget

Tasting

Colour
Bright and clear, the colour reveals a hue ranging from pale lemon to medium gold.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with subtle smoky notes, accompanied by aromas of stone fruit such as white peach and citrus. Delicate spicy touches and nuances of aniseed or fennel add to this fine complexity.

Palate
The attack is taut, mineral and remarkably precise. The mid-palate reveals a lovely concentration of ripe fruit and citrus, supported by crisp acidity. The long, persistent finish stands out with a saline touch and fine spicy notes.

Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs beautifully with delicate seafood such as fresh oysters, or pan-fried fish with a light cream sauce. It also enhances roasted poultry, as well as cheeses such as goat's cheese, young Comté or Beaufort. A mushroom or seafood risotto is also an excellent choice.

Service and storage

Ready to enjoy now, this Saint-Véran Village "Lieu (Inter)Dit" 2022 can also be cellared and enjoyed until around 2030.

The precision and mineral expression of a white wine from Saint-Véran

The estate

Founded in 1990 by Jean-Marie Guffens, the négociant house Verget is located in Sologny, in the heart of the Mâconnais, in Burgundy. From its very beginnings, the estate distinguished itself through its commitment to revealing the potential of the region's terroirs through minimal-intervention winemaking and rigorous grape selection. Today, Julien Desplans heads the estate, carrying on the founder's philosophy of excellence and precision. The house is particularly renowned for its distinctive approach and the outstanding quality of its white wines.

The vineyard

The grapes behind this Saint-Véran come from the Côte-Rôtie and Terres Noires plots, located in the commune of Davayé. This terroir is characterised by shallow soils composed of hard Jurassic limestone, lending a strong mineral identity. The Côte-Rôtie plot benefits from full southern exposure, while the Terres Noires plot stands out for its dark, stony soils. The estate favours old vines, cultivated according to sustainable or organic practices, with deliberately low yields to ensure optimal berry concentration.

The vintage

2022 was marked by variable climatic conditions, with some areas suffering water stress linked to drought. However, the later-ripening plots benefited from these conditions, delivering good volumes and lovely concentration. This vintage required few treatments in the vineyard, resulting in a healthy, high-quality harvest.

Winemaking and aging

This Saint-Véran Village "Lieu (Inter)Dit" 2022 is made exclusively from first-press juice, fermented using indigenous yeasts. Ageing then takes place over seven months in oak barrels, 30% of which are new. This maturation period is accompanied by several regular bâtonnages, a technique used to resuspend the lees in order to bring texture and complexity to the wine.

Grape variety

Chardonnay (100%).
