Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for Villa Madeleine Rouge 2020
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays an intense red color that will evolve toward subtle garnet highlights over the years.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals beautiful depth with aromas of black fruits such as blackberry and blueberry. Interwoven are notes of red fruits brought by grenache, along with Mediterranean hints of lavender, thyme, black olive, and leather.
Palate
Both rich, ripe, and highly precise, the palate offers a fine and complex tannic structure. A lovely freshness and a salinity typical of its coastal terroir enhance this elegant tasting experience.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine pairs wonderfully with robust meats and slow-cooked dishes. It is an ideal match for a rack of roasted lamb, a Provençal stew, a fine grilled rib of beef, or even hare à la royale.
Serving and cellaring
With remarkable aging potential, Villa Madeleine Rouge 2020 can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2040. For a more original tasting experience, it can be served slightly chilled during summer evenings.
The richness and precision of a Bandol red wine
The estate
Founded in 2002 in the South-East of France, Maison Hecht & Bannier is behind the Villa Madeleine range. Now led by its two founders, Gregory Hecht and François Bannier, this négociant company stands out for its rigorous approach and long-term partnerships with local winegrowers. A pioneer in its region, the estate has been certified organic since 2007 and was awarded the prestigious B Corp label in 2022, recognizing its deep commitment to responsible and environmentally respectful viticulture.
The vineyard
The vines for this cuvée thrive on the sun-drenched terroirs of the Bandol appellation, facing the Mediterranean Sea. The vineyard is planted on traditional terraces known as restanques, oriented southeast. The soils are composed of great geological diversity, combining limestone, small stones, sandstone, and sandy marl. Swept by the mistral, which naturally protects the grapes, the vines benefit from optimal sunshine throughout the year.
The vintage
The year 2020 began with a mild winter, followed by a spring with regular rainfall. These favorable weather conditions allowed for healthy and balanced vine development throughout the growing cycle, resulting in a high-quality harvest.
Winemaking and aging
The wine undergoes a prolonged and delicate aging of 20 months in large wooden foudres, refining the tannins without masking the fruit. This process is followed by 6 months of resting in neutral concrete tanks to stabilize the wine while preserving its natural freshness.
Grape varieties
This wine is predominantly composed of mourvèdre, complemented by grenache and cinsault.
