René Gabriel
Deep purple-garnet, dense at the core with a violet sheen on the rim. An intense bouquet of blue and black berries, blackcurrant, a hint of dried banana and nutty edges; it shows plenty of freshness while also delivering beautiful Cabernet ripeness on the nose. On the palate, an unprecedented suppleness, lots of creamy melt over hefty tannins; at its heart, finely mellow tannins that give the body real flesh. As the cellar master of the time, Jean-Paul Gardère of Latour, used to say: if a Pauillac smells of banana on the nose, then it’s a truly great wine! He was right—and this brilliant 2009 Pontet-Canet proves it. (19/20).
14: Right after uncorking: dark garnet with violet reflections. A warm bouquet—prunes, dark woods, bread crust—intense yet still extremely restrained and self-contained. A compact aromatic grenade. With decanting, it showed tremendous mineral depth and revealed a touch of truffle. On the palate, it comes with massive astringency and demanding tannins, yet shows great concentration; but it still clenches its tannic fist and, shortly after opening, remains completely inaccessible. Still, in the finish and the power of its shape, you can sense its gigantic greatness. 19/20.
At the Wine & Dine: absolutely nothing has changed since decanting! You feel the enormous concentration and also the warmth/heat of the vintage. It remains very introverted and releases little aromatics. On the palate, a Cabernet concentrate with an incredibly promising future—albeit with the understandable handicap of youthful closedness! 19/20.
16: Deep purple-ruby, showing little rim. The nose is overwhelming, though you can assume it is currently only showing part of what will come later. Red-fruit notes, plums, fine woods; it builds and reveals more and more layers. On the palate, very dense, compact, still compressed, signalling that today it has no desire to please. The score for this shy behemoth therefore borders on fortune-telling. 19/20—wait a long time yet.
20: Tasted spontaneously alongside a few other 2009s. It’s now slowly showing what it’s made of. It could well be the best Pontet-Canet of both the new and the old era. It impressed me profoundly!
