An elegant, delicate Volnay from sustainable viticulture in Burgundy
The estate
Acquired in 2014 by the Frey family, Château Corton C. is a historic Burgundy estate located in Aloxe-Corton in the Côte de Beaune. Listed as a historic monument and built in the late 19th century over 15th-century cellars, the château is home to a seven-hectare vineyard spanning thirteen prestigious appellations. Under the leadership of the Frey family, the current owner, the estate began converting to organic farming, certified in 2021, and is gradually adopting biodynamic practices. In 2025, Delphine Frey assumed a leading role in the estate’s management, carrying forward the vision established by her sister Caroline.
The vineyard
This Volnay comes from plots located on the steep slopes of the Côte de Beaune, between 230 and 280 meters above sea level. The vines benefit from a southeast exposure on clay-limestone soils composed of oolitic limestone and schist. This distinctive geology, combined with the appellation’s specific microclimate, gives Volnay wines their feminine, delicate character, recognized since the 18th century.
The vintage
The 2018 vintage in Burgundy was marked by a wet winter and spring that replenished water reserves, followed by a hot, sunny summer. Exceptionally favorable summer conditions enabled optimal grape ripening, with no disease pressure and no climate-related damage. The Côte de Beaune particularly shone that year, producing balanced wines combining freshness with phenolic ripeness.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for this Volnay Village 2018 were harvested by hand and carefully sorted before meticulous destemming. Vinification took place in ovoid concrete vats equipped with temperature-control systems, allowing fermentation that respects the terroir’s characteristics. Aging lasted around fifteen months in French oak barrels, thirty percent of which were new, with the remainder made up of previously used barrels and small stoneware tanks, encouraging gentle micro-oxygenation.
