A Languedoc wine combining Mediterranean power and Bordeaux elegance

The estate

Acquired in 1998 by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and her two sons, Domaine de Baronarques is a historic 17th-century estate located in the Languedoc. After five years of complete renovation of the vineyard and facilities, the estate produced its first vintage in 2003, the year the AOC Limoux rouge was created. Now owned by Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild and Camille Sereys de Rothschild, the estate spans 110 hectares, 43 of which are planted with vines. Managed by Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A., Domaine de Baronarques benefits from the expertise developed at the family's prestigious Bordeaux châteaux and stands out as a benchmark for quality in the Languedoc.

The vineyard

La Capitelle du Domaine de Baronarques comes from a vineyard located in the commune of Saint-Polycarpe, near Limoux, in the Aude department. The plots are planted between 250 and 350 meters above sea level on clay-limestone soils, with some more gravelly and sandy areas. This exceptional geographical location, 400 kilometers from the Atlantic and 100 kilometers from the Mediterranean, gives the vineyard a dual maritime climatic influence tempered by the proximity of the Pyrenees. The vines benefit from optimal sunshine while retaining precious freshness thanks to the altitude and the air currents circulating in the valley. The high planting density, reaching 7,500 vines per hectare on certain plots, promotes a natural limitation of yields and optimal ripening of the grapes.

The vintage

The 2015-2016 winter was particularly mild with only five mornings of frost and temperatures one to two degrees higher than seasonal averages. Winter rainfall of 252 millimeters allowed the soil water reserves to be replenished. Budbreak occurred ten days earlier than the usual average. Spring and early summer saw temperatures slightly below normal, moderately slowing vegetative development. Flowering took place between June 3 and 15, five days later than in previous years. July, August and September were hot and dry, with only 35 millimeters of rain during this period and temperatures one degree higher than average. Veraison occurred between August 4 and 22, within the usual timeframe for the estate. The harvest began three days early, from September 28 to October 19, 2016, in ideal weather conditions allowing for the harvest of perfectly healthy and ripe grapes.

Winemaking and aging

After manual harvesting in twelve-kilogram crates, the grapes for La Capitelle du Domaine de Baronarques 2016 are sorted on a table before being destemmed and lightly crushed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in small stainless steel vats for approximately eight days at a maximum temperature of 30°C, followed by maceration for two to four weeks. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for six months in barrels of one or two wines from Château Mouton Rothschild, giving this Languedoc wine a measured contribution of woody notes while preserving the expression of the fruit and the terroir.
