Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Aleste Sibi et Paucis 2013 from Sandrone Luciano

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays an intense and concentrated ruby color.

Nose

Open and generous, the nose reveals aromas of red cherry and wild strawberry, accompanied by floral and balsamic notes reflecting fine maturity and increasing complexity.

Palate

On the palate, the wine is expansive with remarkable breadth. Notes of cinnamon, Damson plum, and black cherry unfold, supported by excellent acidity characteristic of the 2013 vintage. Despite the expected austerity of this cool vintage, the wine surprises with its generosity and balance. The well-developed and integrated tannins bring finesse and depth, while the finish is long and persistent.

Food and wine pairings

This Barolo pairs perfectly with braised red meats, game in sauce, dishes featuring Piedmont white truffles, as well as aged hard cheeses.

Serving and cellaring

The Aleste Sibi et Paucis 2013 can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve until at least 2048. Decanting for one to two hours before serving will allow the wine to reveal its full complexity. Serve at a temperature of 60 to 64°F.

An exceptional Barolo from the iconic terroir of Cannubi Boschis

The estate

Founded in 1978 in Piedmont, the Domaine Sandrone Luciano embodies the excellence of Barolo. Luciano Sandrone, a former cellar master with no winemaking heritage, acquired his first plot in Cannubi Boschis in 1977 and vinified his first bottles in the family garage. Today, the estate covers 27 hectares, including 22 in Barolo, cultivating nebbiolo, dolcetto, and barbera. Since the founder’s passing in January 2023, the estate remains a family business run by his wife Mariuccia, his brother Luca, his daughter Barbara, and his grandchildren Alessia and Stefano. The iconic “Sibi et Paucis” project, extending aging by an additional ten years, particularly distinguishes this pioneering house of Piedmont.

The vineyard

The Cannubi Boschis vineyard is located in the village of Barolo, on the southeast-facing Cannubi hill. The moderately compact marl soils give the wine its structure and powerful character.

The vintage

The 2013 vintage is characterized by its fresh and classic profile. After a start to the year marked by cool and rainy conditions that made budbreak difficult, a warm and dry period set in from July through October. Cool nights during the final ripening phase promoted phenolic development, resulting in grapes of excellent quality despite contrasting weather conditions.

Winemaking and aging

The harvest took place on October 12 and 22, allowing optimal grape ripeness. The Aleste Sibi et Paucis 2013 is crafted using traditional methods that respect the terroir. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes place in open stainless steel tanks, accompanied by maceration. Malolactic fermentation and aging occur in 500-liter French oak barrels. This vintage benefited from an additional six years of aging in the estate’s cellars after its initial release date in September 2017, in accordance with the “Sibi et Paucis” project.

Grape variety

100% nebbiolo.
