The elegance and precision of a Premier Cru from Puligny-Montrachet grown biodynamically in the Côte de Beaune
The estate
Daughter of one of Burgundy’s greatest wine-growing families, Francine Picard took over in the late 1990s the estate historically run by her father. The Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve stretches across the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin, at the heart of some of the finest climats and terroirs in wine-growing Burgundy.
With a view to creating synergy between the land and the wines, Francine Picard farms her plots in line with biodynamic principles and works with passion and extreme attention to detail to produce wines that reflect the identity of their terroir. From a 110-hectare vineyard managed using “agro-ecology”, the chardonnay and pinot noir from Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve are renowned for their quality, precision and elegance. Since May 2019, Antoine Lepetit de la Bigne, a specialist in biodynamic viticulture, has joined the Domaine team as Technical Director.
The vineyard
The La Garenne climat lies mid-slope at around 150 meters above sea level, benefiting from a south-southeast exposure. Located as an extension of the prestigious Le Montrachet cru, this Puligny-Montrachet terroir rests on marls and colluvium over undefined brown-red calcareous soils. The soil offers a significant water reserve down to 60 centimeters deep. The vineyard combines very old 70-year-old vines with a section of younger vines. Vineyard management follows biodynamic principles, and the soils are naturally grassed and mechanically worked.
The vintage
The 2022 vintage stands out for its quality and generosity. Late budbreak helped avoid April frosts. The vines then withstood four heatwaves and drought conditions. Wines from the 2022 vintage are revealing themselves as rounded, supple and complex, with aromas of fresh fruit and lovely vibrancy.
Winemaking and aging
The Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru "La Garenne" 2022 harvest is carried out by hand into small crates, with sorting on a table if necessary. The grapes are pressed as whole clusters in a pneumatic press for 2 hours 30 minutes. Settling takes place in stainless-steel tanks at 12°C overnight. The must is then racked directly into barrels for alcoholic fermentation. Aging takes place over 18 months on lees in 350-liter barrels that have already been used for two wines or more, supplied by the coopers Damy and Stockinger.
Grape variety
This white wine from Burgundy is 100% chardonnay.
