Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Carruades de Lafite 2005
Tasting
Colour
This red wine has a deep, luminous colour ranging from intense ruby to garnet, with delicate brick-red glints at the rim.
Nose
The bouquet is beautifully complex, blending aromas of fully ripe black fruits such as blackberry, blackcurrant and blueberry. Subtle hints of cedar, graphite and spice join them, evolving over time into tertiary notes of blond tobacco, fine leather and forest floor.
Palate
The attack is supple and round, giving way to a dense, vibrant and concentrated mid-palate. Firm yet finely woven tannins are perfectly balanced by lovely acidity, leading to a long, harmonious finish with a delicate touch of oak.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs beautifully with robust meats such as grilled rib of beef, roast duck breast or game in a mushroom sauce. It also goes very well with fine truffled poultry and aged hard cheeses such as mature Comté or Saint-Nectaire.
Serving and ageing
To enjoy this Carruades de Lafite 2005 at its best, serve it at 16–18°C and decant it one to two hours beforehand. Having reached a fine maturity, it can be enjoyed now and will continue to develop gracefully until around 2035.
The complexity and balance of a red wine from Pauillac
The estate
Established as a wine estate in the 17th century and acquired by Baron James de Rothschild in 1868, Château Lafite-Rothschild is an iconic name in Bordeaux. Now run by Saskia de Rothschild, this illustrious property covers 267 hectares, 112 of which are under vine. A pioneer in agronomic research and ecological transition, the estate stands out for its conversion to organic farming, its trials in biodynamics and its deep commitment to preserving local biodiversity.
The vineyard
Located in the northern part of the Pauillac appellation, the terroir consists of deep gravel mounds over a clay and limestone subsoil. Benefiting from the moderating influence of the Gironde estuary, the vines, which are around 40 years old on average, enjoy optimal natural drainage. The estate places great importance on the surrounding ecosystem, preserving vast Natura 2000 protected areas, marshes and hedgerows, thereby fostering rich functional biodiversity.
The vintage
The 2005 vintage is renowned for its particularly favourable weather conditions in the region. This ideal climate allowed the berries to reach perfect ripeness, producing a healthy harvest with superb concentration and preserved freshness.
Winemaking and ageing
Carruades de Lafite 2005 is crafted through careful extraction in vats to preserve the balance and finesse of the juice. The wine is then aged for 18 to 20 months in barrels, around 10% of them new, most of which held the estate's first wine the previous year.
Grape varieties
This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Petit Verdot (around 2%).
