Decanter

Situated outside the winery in Vertus, Le Grand Clos is a true walled clos planted mostly to Chardonnay on the deeper soils of this part of the village. It yields a gastronomic, Burgundian style of blanc de blancs amplified through characterful oak vinification. There are appealing, sweet-toned barrel aromatics of jasmine and tonka bean, with ripe caramelised pineapple and sweet orange citrus finding a rounded, almost decadent ripeness on the palate that closes with a touch of balancing grip. With only 1,788 bottles made, collectors interested in Champagne's newest clos bottling will find plenty of interest.

Claire Nesbitt

This powerful, rich blanc de blancs is toasty and buttery, showing apricots, toasted brioche, white chocolate, salted butter and nutmeg on the nose. Lemon meringue pie, too. It's compact and creamy on the palate, very intense, yet minerally and salty at the same time. Long and concentrated. The first separate bottling of this single vineyard in Vertus. 1,788 bottles made. 100% chardonnay vinified in oak. 2 g/L dosage. Disgorged March 2025. Drink or hold.

Description

An exceptional single-plot Champagne from a Champagne Monopole

The estate

Founded in 2005, the Maison de Champagne Barons de Rothschild is a family project close to the heart, born from the unique alliance of the three branches (Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Clarke, Château Lafite Rothschild), aiming to exalt the majestic terroir of Champagne, which stands for quality and the art of living beyond borders. "Achievement through great deeds" – this has been the ambition of the Rothschild family for over 250 years, using their viticultural experience in Bordeaux to create excellent Champagnes at the intersection of know-how and tradition.

The Maison de Champagne Barons de Rothschild, embodying values such as excellence, taste, and conviviality, and established in Reims since 2007 near famous Champagne Houses, presents cuvées whose unique style harmoniously combines finesse, balance, and purity.

The vineyard

The Maison Barons de Rothschild cuvées are vinified from grapes from exceptional Champagne terroirs, particularly from the Grands Crus and Premiers Crus of the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims.

The Cuvée

Le Grand Clos is a unique 52-are vineyard in Vertus, on the Côte des Blancs, classified as Premier Cru. This historic Monopole, whose name is listed in the Napoleonic land registry and was acquired in 2013, rests on deep chalky soils with optimal exposure. The 40-year-old Chardonnay vines benefit from this exceptional terroir, surrounded by walls built over two centuries ago.

Winemaking and ageing

Vinification takes place entirely in oak barrels, followed by 13 months of ageing on the fine lees in barrels. This approach lends the Champagne its complexity and aromatic depth, rounded off by 55 months of bottle ageing before release.

Grape variety

The Maison de Champagne Barons de Rothschild Le Grand Clos Blanc de Blancs 2019 is a 100% Chardonnay.
