Raspberries, red apples, pie crust, cloves and grapefruit peel on the nose. Nicely fruity with delicious red berry notes coming to the forefront. Very fine bubbles. Excellent tension, too. Dry. 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. Disgorged October 2022. 4.5 g/L dosage. Drink now.

Philipponnat’s tête de cuvée, the 2016 Champagne Grand Cru 1522 Extra Brut is 70% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay, with the Pinot Noir coming from Aÿ and Verzy and the Chardonnay from Mesnil-sur-Oger. It pours a copper straw hue and is highly aromatic, with rounded layers of spice along with notes of graham cracker, apricot, almond, and orange sherbet. Full-bodied without feeling too broad, it has a chalky, rich texture with a noble feel and a savory, mineral-tinged backbone. Long and mouthwatering on the palate, with a food-friendly, rounded feel, it has the intensity and power of the three sites where it originated and is a beautiful blend. Drink 2024-2044. 10,574 bottles were produced. Disgorged in October 2022, with 4.5 grams per liter dosage.

The estate

Based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ for nearly five centuries, the House of Champagne Philipponnat is one of the historic names of the Champagne region. Singularity, excellence, generosity and simplicity are the values that guide this house, which has retained its family spirit. Owned by the house since 1935, the legendary Clos des Goisses is one of the oldest and most prestigious clos in Champagne. This gem gives rise to rare Champagnes of exceptional power.

The House of Champagne Philipponnat tends an exceptional 20-hectare vineyard of Premier and Grand Cru sites, located notably in Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay.

The vineyard

The Cuvée 1522 Grand Cru by Philipponnat is crafted from illustrious terroirs in Champagne. The name of Philipponnat's Cuvée 1522 Grand Cru refers to the year in which the Philipponnat family settled in the village of Ay.

Winemaking and ageing

Made from the house's finest vineyards, this exceptional cuvée is partly vinified in oak without malolactic fermentation to preserve its freshness and develop its complexity. Aged for several years, this 2016 vintage Champagne is a refined expression of the minerality, freshness and balance of Champagne's greatest terroirs.

Blend

The Cuvée 1522 Grand Cru 2016 by Philipponnat is a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
