Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "La Dent de Chien" 2023 Château de la Maltroye

Tasting

Colour
Pale yellow in colour, it appears particularly luminous.

Nose
The bouquet opens with floral aromas delicately underscored by hints of menthol and redcurrant, accompanied by buttery and mineral notes. With aeration, notes of citrus, hawthorn, fresh almond and subtle woody spices emerge.

Palate
The palate opens fresh and balanced, offering fine volume in the mid-palate supported by a characteristic vivacity. The elegant texture is carried by a lovely natural tension that extends through to a dry, deeply mineral finish.

Food and Wine Pairing

This white wine pairs beautifully with seafood such as lobster or scallops, as well as grilled or poached fish. It also makes a wonderful match for roast poultry with cream and mushrooms, veal, or lightly matured soft cheeses.

This Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "La Dent de Chien" 2023 will reveal its full potential after a few years in the cellar and can be enjoyed until around 2035.

The Precise, Mineral Expression of a Great Chassagne-Montrachet Terroir

The Estate

Founded in 1941 by the Cournut family, Château de la Maltroye is located at the heart of the Côte de Beaune, in Burgundy. The estate spans around fifteen hectares and stands out for its impressive collection of Premiers Crus. Since 1993, Jean-Pierre Cournut has run the estate with an approach combining engineering precision and respect for tradition. Thanks to modern facilities and an uncompromising commitment to quality, the estate has established itself as an essential reference, producing wines that faithfully reflect the complexity of their terroirs.

The Vineyard

The "La Dent de Chien" plot lies on the upper slopes of the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation, on the edge of Saint-Aubin. This climat, covering a little over half a hectare, rests on shallow soils made up of calcareous clay and limestone rock. This elevated position, combined with the fineness of the soil, encourages optimal grape concentration while preserving fine natural acidity. The vines here are mechanically worked and yields are rigorously managed.

The Vintage

The year began with a mild, dry winter, delaying budburst and thereby avoiding spring frosts. A warm June allowed for a quick, even flowering. Summer brought adequate rainfall for vine health. Late August and early September were marked by an extreme heatwave approaching 40°C. These conditions produced grapes of great ripeness while retaining fine balance.

Winemaking and Ageing

The grapes for this Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "La Dent de Chien" 2023 are hand-harvested into small crates and undergo a meticulous double sorting. Pressing takes place within two hours of picking. Fermentation begins in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks before the must is transferred to oak barrels to complete both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. Ageing continues in barrel for twelve months. Bottling is carried out under neutral gas and vacuum to preserve the quality of the wine.
