On the palate, firm—somewhat hard due to the concentration, almost metallic, with a drying, tooth-coating feel—yet as dense as rarely seen before. It can still gain a point if its potential is realized with further aging.

Could gain a point if it manages to absorb its potential with further ageing. 16/20 2003 – 2012 Medium ruby. Rather delicate bouquet with a fresh sour-cherry touch, tobacco notes, fairly slender. On the palate, medium-bodied, with a gentle vegetal sheen, currant-like notes and green, spicy Cabernet tones, aromatic finish. It keeps wavering between lightness and strictness.

Bright red color. Medium to good intensity. Brilliant. Medium-intensity nose. Fruity. Smoky. Ripe. Spicy. The attack on the palate is more substantial than in the past. The wine develops with savory, rounded character, showing spicy and fruity flavors and rounded tannins. The finish suggests a touch of toasty notes and tannins that still need to integrate, as they are still marked by oak. Normal length. A renewal, with a bit more flesh. Wait 3 to 4 years.

Nose
The bouquet proves particularly expressive. It exudes aromas of ripe fruit such as blackcurrant and black cherry, harmoniously underscored by oaky, toasted and subtly smoky notes.

Palate
On the palate, this wine offers a perfectly balanced structure. The tannins, well present, blend harmoniously to deliver a texture without harshness. The finish shows lovely persistence, extending the fruity and oaky nuances.

Serving and Cellaring

Designed to evolve favourably over some ten years, this 1999 vintage has now reached its full maturity. It now offers a tertiary aromatic palette, marked by touches of leather and undergrowth.

The Elegance and Structure of a Pessac-Léognan Red Wine

The Estate

While vines have grown on this terroir since Gallo-Roman times, Château Picque Caillou was founded in 1756, under the impetus of architect Jean Laclotte. Located in Mérignac, at the gates of Bordeaux, this historic estate is today the last remaining vineyard within the town's boundaries. Long owned by the Denis family and later run by Isabelle and Paulin Calvet in the late 1990s, the estate now belongs to Laurent Marti. He continues to uphold the excellence of this urban vineyard while developing its wine tourism appeal.

The Vineyard

This Pessac-Léognan wine comes from a distinctive urban vineyard, planted on highly free-draining Pyrenean gravel. This warm, well-drained terroir encourages deep root growth and early ripening of the berries. In the late 1990s, the vines dedicated to red wine covered approximately 19 hectares, with an average age of 35 years. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand, ensuring a rigorous selection of the bunches.

The Vintage

1999 is recognised as a good vintage in the Bordeaux region. Favourable weather conditions ensured optimal ripening of the berries, resulting in wines with fine balance.

Winemaking and Ageing

The making of this wine from Château Picque Caillou follows the purest Bordeaux tradition. After careful vinification, the wine undergoes controlled ageing in oak barrels, giving it its structure and delicately toasted notes.

Grape Varieties

This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (40%) and Cabernet Franc (10%).
