Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Château Valandraud 2001
Tasting notes
Nose
The nose opens with deep black fruit, supported by notes of cedar, chocolate, liquorice and smoke from oak ageing, which enrich the fruit with soft spices.
Palate
The palate stands out for its chalky texture and pronounced tension, carried by ripe tannins that reflect the concentration sought in the estate's style.
A Saint-Émilion wine shaped by a pioneering spirit and an exceptional limestone terroir
The estate
Château Valandraud was founded in 1991 in Saint-Émilion, in the Bordeaux region, under the impetus of Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud, then newcomers to winegrowing but driven by a modern vision of wine. Born in a makeshift space adjoining their home, the estate quickly became one of the emblems of the garage wine movement before being promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 2012 classification. Today, the property belongs to Christophe and Marie Lefévère, who perpetuate this identity shaped by viticultural precision and the demand for quality inherited from its founders.
The vineyard
The Château Valandraud vineyard extends within the Saint-Émilion appellation, between the Fongaban valley and the Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse plateau, with a few plots located in the commune of Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens. The soils, predominantly clay-limestone, are complemented by sections of gravel and sand, offering a diversity of terroirs conducive to the complexity of the blends. Cultivated like a garden at the heart of preserved biotopes, the vines benefit from a temperate oceanic climate and, from this vintage onwards, from an approach oriented towards organic methods, marking an important milestone in the estate's environmental history.
Vinification and ageing
The vinification of Château Valandraud 2001 reflects the garagiste philosophy on which the estate's reputation was built, favouring rigorous plot-by-plot selection and deliberately limited yields. Ageing relies on a significant proportion of new barrels, chosen to provide structure, aromatic complexity and ageing potential, in keeping with the ambitious style that characterises the château's entire production.
Grape varieties
The Château Valandraud blend is based mainly on Merlot, the king of grape varieties on the Right Bank, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which bring freshness and structure to the blend.
