The estate
Established in 1871 in Bergholtz in the Haut-Rhin, Domaine Dirler-Cadé now spans 18 hectares in Alsace, 42% of which are classified as Grands Crus (Saering, Spiegel, Kessler, Kitterlé). Under the leadership of Jean Dirler and Ludivine Hell-Cadé, who combined their vineyards in 2000, the estate stands out for its pioneering commitment to biodynamics since 1998. The exceptional pink sandstone soils of the Buntsandstein lend the wines deep minerality and remarkable elegance, while horse work and natural biodynamic preparations reflect the estate’s attachment to traditional methods that respect the Alsatian terroir.
The vineyard
Grand Cru Kessler is located on the eastern slope of the Unterlinger hill, in the center of the valley, between 300 and 390 meters above sea level. Facing due south and southeast, this terroir benefits from natural protection against northern winds. The Pinot Gris vines, 44 years old, take root in a sandy-clay-sandstone soil resting on a Vosges sandstone (Buntsandstein) substrate. Farmed organically and certified biodynamic by Ecocert since 1998, the parcels receive plant-based preparations (willow, nettle, meadowsweet, horsetail) that strengthen the vitality of the Alsatian vineyard and the expression of the terroir.
Winemaking and aging
The Pinot Gris Grand Cru "Kessler" Élément Feu 2022 harvest is carried out entirely by hand, with rigorous sorting directly in the vineyard. Whole bunches are pressed in a pneumatic press before spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 11 months on fine lees in 150-year-old oak foudres, helping preserve the purity of the fruit while adding complexity and structure.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Gris.
