An Alsace Grand Cru riesling combining power and finesse on the Kessler terroir
The estate
Domaine Dirler-Cadé was officially established in 2000 following the union of the vineyards of Jean Dirler and Ludivine Hell-Cadé, the fifth generation of a winegrowing family based in Bergholtz since 1871. Located between Colmar and Mulhouse in Alsace, the estate covers 18 hectares, 42% of which are Grands Crus (Kitterlé, Kessler, Saering and Spiegel). Jean and Ludivine Dirler have been practicing certified biodynamics since 1998 across the entire vineyard, planted mainly with riesling, gewurztraminer and muscat. Since 2019, the estate has featured on its labels its philosophy linking each Grand Cru to the four natural elements.
The vineyard
The Grand Cru Kessler, and more specifically the lieu-dit "Heisse Wanne" (hot bowl), lies on the eastern slope of the Unterlinger hillside in Alsace. The 63-year-old vines grow on Vosges sandstone soil of Buntsandstein, characterized by sandy-sandstone terrain. The vineyard ranges from 300 to 390 meters in altitude on a steep slope. Vineyard management follows the principles of organic and biodynamic farming certified by Ecocert, using plant-based preparations (willow, nettle, meadowsweet, horsetail).
Winemaking and aging
The harvest for Riesling Grand cru "Kessler" H.W. Élément Feu 2022 is carried out entirely by hand, with sorting done directly in the vineyard. Whole clusters are pressed pneumatically. After natural settling, fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then aged on lees for 11 months, allowing it to develop complexity and texture.
Grape variety
100% riesling.
