An elegant and mineral Alsace riesling from Domaine Dirler-Cadé

The estate

Founded in 1871 by Jean Dirler in Bergholtz, the Domaine Dirler-Cadé has upheld a tradition of viticultural excellence in Alsace for five generations. In 1998, the marriage of Jean Dirler and Ludivine Hell-Cadé united two winemaking families, leading to the creation of the present-day estate in 2000. Pioneers of biodynamics since 1998, Jean and Ludivine Dirler now manage this Biodyvin-certified estate with sensitivity and expertise. The estate was recently awarded three stars in the 2025 Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France by La Revue du Vin de France, recognizing the excellence of its wines from exceptional terroirs.

The vineyard

The Riesling "Belzbrunnen" comes from a lieu-dit located in Bergholtz, in the Guebwiller area of Alsace, twenty-five kilometers between Colmar and Mulhouse. This parcel benefits from a southeast exposure and rests on sandy clay-sandstone soils at the surface with clay-sandstone composition at depth. The vineyard lies between three Grands Crus (Kessler, Saering and Spiegel) and shares the same geological base of eroded Buntsandstein sandstone, a Triassic formation dating back 250 million years. This geological substrate, present in near-pure form, gives the wines remarkable minerality and finesse. Vineyard management follows biodynamic principles, including soil plowing, natural summer grass cover, and the use of biodynamic preparations and herbal teas, promoting deep root development and biodiversity.

The vintage

The 2019 vintage in Alsace proved to be of excellent quality, producing perfectly ripe rieslings while retaining fine acidity. Climatic conditions favored an optimal balance between fruit ripeness and freshness, resulting in elegant wines with strong aging potential.

Winemaking and aging

Riesling "Belzbrunnen" 2019 is vinified using a traditional approach that respects the fruit. The hand-harvested grapes undergo slow whole-cluster pressing for eight to ten hours using pneumatic presses. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for ten months on fine lees in stainless steel tanks, developing complexity and textural richness without the use of oak.

Grape variety

100% riesling.
