Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023 Domaine du Château de Meursault

Tasting notes

Colour
This white wine from France reveals a pale golden hue with luminous clarity.

Nose
Wonderfully intense, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes of ripe pear, white flowers and wet stone. It then gains complexity, revealing touches of fresh almond, crushed fennel and citrus, underlined by subtle nuances of jasmine and honey.

Palate
The attack is both energetic and powerful, carried by a lovely freshness. The mid-palate offers concentrated fruit, supported by a persistent, lively minerality. The whole combines roundness with tension, stretching towards a long, slightly austere finish that promises a remarkable evolution.

Food and wine pairing

This grand cru pairs wonderfully with shellfish such as roasted lobster or scallops in cream sauce. It also enhances white-fleshed fish like sole meunière, as well as poultry in sauce, such as chicken with morels. Finally, it makes an ideal match for aged hard cheeses like Comté, Beaufort or Parmesan.

Service and storage

For an optimal tasting experience, it is recommended to serve this Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023 at a temperature between 12 and 14°C, taking care to decant it for 20 to 30 minutes while it is still young. Built for aging, this wine will reveal its full potential and can be enjoyed until around 2042.

Other characteristics

This vintage has been widely praised by critics, notably earning an excellent score of 95/100 from the Bettane + Desseauve tasting committee.

The richness and mineral tension of a great Corton-Charlemagne wine

The estate

Founded in the eleventh century, the Domaine du Château de Meursault is a historic, unmissable figure in Burgundy. Located on the Côte de Beaune, the estate spans approximately 67 hectares. Acquired in 2012 by the Halley family and now managed by Stéphane Follin-Arbelet, the domaine stands out for its environmental commitment. Fully certified organic since 2022, it is innovating with agroecological practices, such as planting a riparian forest, in order to preserve biodiversity and adapt its vineyard to climate challenges.

The vineyard

The domaine's Corton-Charlemagne plot covers a confidential area of 15.83 ares. Situated midslope on a steep, southwest-facing incline, the vines benefit from ideal sun exposure. The terroir consists of white marl over a limestone subsoil, providing perfect natural drainage. In addition, the proximity of a forest at the top of the hill shields the vines from cold northern winds while helping regulate temperatures during periods of intense heat.

The vintage

The year 2023 began with flowering in late May under warm temperatures, followed by cooler, unsettled weather that caused coulure and millerandage, reducing the size of the berries. A heatwave then set in from early June to early July. Véraison took place in early August under conditions favorable to rapid ripening. Harvest occurred early, between the end of August and the beginning of September.

Winemaking and aging

The making of the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023 is orchestrated with precision by cellar master Emmanuel Escutenaire. Every step is meticulously tailored, whether it concerns the choice of fermentation vessels, aging in wood, the intensity of the lees stirring, or the ideal moment for bottling.
