Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Pommard 1er Cru "Clos des Epenots" 2023

Tasting

Colour
This red wine from France reveals a concentrated ruby hue of moderate intensity, reflecting the beautiful ripeness of the grapes.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with expressive notes of red and black fruit, dominated by cherry. Subtle mineral and earthy touches underscore the identity of its terroir.

Palate
The palate offers a velvety tannic texture, supported by a fleshy, powerful structure. The whole displays remarkable balance, stretching towards a persistent finish where the fruity aromas continue to charm the senses.

Food and Wine Pairing

The estate suggests pairing this wine with game such as wild duck, pheasant or venison. It also pairs wonderfully with braised or pastry-wrapped beef dishes, roasted poultry such as coq au vin, and pork fillets with mushrooms. For cheese, a mature Époisses will be an excellent match.

Service and Storage

For an optimal tasting experience, this Pommard 1er Cru "Clos des Epenots" 2023 should be served at a temperature between 14 and 16°C. Although already approachable, this wine will reveal its full potential after a few years in the cellar and can be kept until around 2043.

Other Characteristics

This wine has an alcohol content of 14.5%.

The Elegance and Structure of a Premier Cru from Pommard

The Estate

Founded in the eleventh century, the Domaine du Château de Meursault is a historic and unmissable estate in Burgundy. Located in the Côte de Beaune, the estate spans 67 hectares divided into more than a hundred plots. Acquired in 2012 by its current owner, Olivier Halley, the vineyard has since undergone extensive modernisation. Led by Stéphane Follin-Arbelet, the estate stands out for its environmental commitment, crowned by organic certification in 2022. The excellence of its terroirs and the precision of its winemaking make it a major reference in the region.

The Vineyard

The climat of Clos des Epenots is a 3.6-hectare plot located at the bottom of the slope within the Pommard appellation. Facing east and southeast, the vines benefit from ideal morning sunlight. The terroir is characterised by ferruginous red soils, rich in iron oxide, mixed with gravel resting on ancient alluvial substrates. This shallow soil, dotted with limestone elements, naturally limits the vine's vigour, thereby encouraging a beautiful concentration in grapes grown according to organic farming principles.

The Vintage

The year 2023 benefited from mild weather conditions during the crucial flowering and véraison stages. Given generally uneven weather across the entire region, careful monitoring of ripeness was necessary to determine the ideal harvest date for each plot. The harvest thus took place between late August and early September.

Winemaking and Aging

The creation of this Pommard 1er Cru "Clos des Epenots" 2023 begins with a double sorting process, both manual and optical, to retain only the healthiest berries. Vinification starts with a five-day cold pre-fermentation maceration, followed by fermentation using indigenous yeasts. The technical team favours gentle pump-overs to extract the tannins with delicacy. After a 16- to 20-day maceration period, the wine is transferred into oak barrels to complete its aging on the lees.

Grape Variety

100% Pinot Noir.
