Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Mercurey 1er Cru "Carline Clos des Champs Martin" 2024 from Domaine Lorenzon
Tasting Notes
Appearance
The colour reveals a deep red hue, adorned with garnet and violet highlights.
Nose
Highly intense, the aromatic bouquet releases scents of red and black fruits such as cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant. With aeration, it becomes more complex, revealing notes of cocoa, sweet spices and orange zest, along with subtle floral and mineral touches.
Palate
The palate is seductive, with a silky texture and remarkably fine tannins. Displaying beautiful concentration and vibrant acidity, it offers a dense character that unfolds into a long, savoury and delicately spiced finish.
Food and Wine Pairings
This red wine pairs wonderfully with grilled red meats, slow-cooked dishes in sauce, or feathered game such as pigeon or quail. It also goes very well with soft-ripened cheeses such as Époisses or Langres.
Serving and Cellaring
For an optimal tasting experience, it is recommended to serve this Mercurey 1er Cru "Carline Clos des Champs Martin" 2024 at a temperature of between 16 and 17°C, taking care to decant it for one to two hours while young in order to release its full aromatic complexity.
The Concentration and Finesse of a Mercurey Premier Cru
The Estate
The Lorenzon family's history in Burgundy began in the early 20th century, but it was in 1997 that Domaine Lorenzon took its modern shape when Bruno Lorenzon took over the family estate. Located at the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, in France, this roughly 9 to 11-hectare vineyard spans some of the finest slopes of Mercurey and Montagny. The current owner, drawing on his experience as a cooper, applies a demanding philosophy here: organic viticulture, controlled yields and minimal intervention in the cellar, establishing the estate as one of the region's foremost benchmarks.
The Vineyard
This cuvée comes from the Clos des Champs Martin, a small plot of about 0.6 hectares nestled within the Mercurey appellation. Facing south and south-west, the vines, over sixty years old, thrive on clay-limestone soils rich in stony debris. The estate practises organic viticulture here, with no herbicides used for three decades. Planting density is exceptionally high, reaching up to 14,000 vines per hectare, encouraging strong root competition and a natural concentration in the berries.
Winemaking and Ageing
To craft this Mercurey 1er Cru "Carline Clos des Champs Martin" 2024, the grapes are hand-harvested into small crates. Vinification takes place with a high proportion of whole clusters, generally around 75 to 80%, using indigenous yeasts and with no chaptalisation whatsoever. Extraction is gentle, with long macerations and very little punching down, to preserve the finesse of the tannins. The wine is then aged for close to twenty months in oak barrels, around 40% of which are new, all meticulously crafted by the winemaker himself.
