Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for Morgon 2023 Domaine Louis Claude Desvignes

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a beautiful ruby red hue of light to medium intensity.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals a lovely complexity blending red and black fruit aromas, such as raspberry, black cherry and plum. Delicate floral notes of violet, peony and rose petal intertwine with mineral and saline touches.

Palate
On the palate, this wine offers a silky texture supported by fine tannins. Its medium body and rounded mouthfeel are perfectly balanced by a lovely freshness. The finish stands out for its long-lasting persistence.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with roasted poultry, light red meats such as beef fillet, or feathered game such as duck. It also goes very well with truffle dishes, mushroom sauces and mature cheeses.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate the complexity of this Morgon 2023, it is recommended to decant it for at least one hour before serving. This vintage can be enjoyed now but has the ageing potential to evolve favourably until around 2033.

Other characteristics

This vintage stands out for its low alcohol content, reflecting a gentle and controlled extraction. The estate is also certified organic.

A Beaujolais wine true to the minerality of its appellation

The estate

Founded in 1712 in the heart of Beaujolais, Domaine Louis Claude Desvignes is a historic reference estate located in Villié-Morgon. Today, the eighth generation, represented by Claude-Emmanuelle and Louis-Benoît Desvignes, runs this family estate of around fourteen hectares. Renowned for their environmentally friendly approach and their attachment to tradition, the current owners have led the estate towards organic certification. Regarded as one of the region's flagship estates, it stands out for its commitment to producing age-worthy wines that express the uniqueness of their terroirs with great purity.

The vineyard

The vineyard extends across the Morgon appellation, with plots resting on complex soils composed of decomposed schist, granite and iron oxide. The vines, with an average age of around sixty years and some plots over a century old, are grown with a high planting density and pruned in the goblet style. These natural conditions, combined with poor soils, naturally limit yields. The entire vineyard is worked mechanically, while harvesting is carried out by hand to preserve the integrity of the bunches.

The vintage

The year began with a classic spring, alternating cool, damp spells with warmer periods, allowing budbreak to take place smoothly in early April. June, particularly warm and sunny, provided ideal conditions for even flowering. Summer continued with a radiant July, encouraging early véraison. Although early August brought a little coolness and moisture, the return of sunshine towards the end of the month allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness, resulting in a generous harvest.

Winemaking and ageing

For this Morgon 2023, winemaking follows the region's traditional methods, avoiding full carbonic maceration. The carefully sorted grapes are placed in the vat as whole bunches or partially destemmed. Extraction is carried out gently through délestage and pumping-over over ten to fifteen days, with a grid keeping the cap submerged. The wine is then aged in vats and concrete eggs on fine lees for around ten months, before light filtration ahead of bottling.
