An Alsace Riesling true to the grape’s expression and the Epfig terroir
The estate
Domaine Ostertag, founded in 1966 by Irma and Adolphe Ostertag with only 20 ares of vines, now spans 15 hectares across some of the finest terroirs in Epfig, in the Bas-Rhin area of Alsace. Since 2018, Arthur Ostertag, the third generation, has led this family estate, distinguished with 3 stars in the Revue du Vin de France guide. A pioneer of Alsace biodynamics, the estate has been certified in organic farming since 1997. The wines stand out for their purity, elegance, and authentic expression of terroir.
The vineyard
Riesling "Les Jardins" comes from a blend of around a dozen parcels located mainly in the commune of Epfig, in Alsace. The vines thrive on varied soils composed of clay, predominantly sandstone, sand, and volcanic deposits. Farmed organically and under certified biodynamic practices, the vineyard benefits from a respectful approach that allows the grapes to fully express their character. This diversity of terroirs lends the wine fine complexity while highlighting the expression of the Riesling grape.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage offered favorable conditions, allowing for an early harvest from the beginning of September. The grapes reached optimal ripeness, ensuring a perfect balance between aromatic freshness and concentrated flavors.
Winemaking and aging
Riesling "Les Jardins" 2023 is vinified with a low-intervention approach. The grapes are pressed as whole clusters in a pneumatic press for 9 hours. Fermentation occurs spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine completes full malolactic fermentation before aging for one year on fine lees in stainless steel tanks. Bottling took place in early September 2024.
Grape variety
100% Riesling.
