Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru "Clos Saint-Jean" 2022 from Domaine Ramonet
Tasting
Colour
The wine displays a brilliant ruby hue, with violet highlights in its youth.
Nose
The nose opens with intense aromas of red fruit such as cherry, raspberry and strawberry. It gains complexity with notes of sweet spices like nutmeg and clove, underpinned by a delicate chalky mineral streak.
Palate
Ample and generous, the palate reveals a velvety texture carried by fine, silky tannins. Lovely freshness balances the whole and draws the wine out towards a long finish marked by fruit and spice.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine is an ideal match for fine charcuterie, roast leg of lamb with delicate herbs, confit vegetables or a board of semi-firm cheeses such as Saint-Nectaire.
Serving and cellaring
To enjoy the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru "Clos Saint-Jean" 2022 at its best, serve it at around 16°C after decanting for about thirty minutes. This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared until around 2037.
The richness and finesse of a Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru from Domaine Ramonet
The estate
Founded in the late 1920s by Pierre Ramonet, Domaine Ramonet is an essential reference in France and in Burgundy. Based in Chassagne-Montrachet, the estate covers around 17 hectares. Long renowned for its exceptional terroirs, the domaine is now run by Jean-Claude Ramonet, supported by the new generation in Michael and Pierre-François. Low yields and old vines make it possible to produce wines of great purity that are true to their terroir.
The vineyard
The historic climat of Clos Saint-Jean lies mid-slope, at the heart of the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation. This terroir enjoys excellent drainage and is made up of a mosaic of clay-limestone soils, combining deep red earth, marl and gravel. The estate's vines, averaging around 60 years of age, are farmed using sustainable practices close to biodynamics, with regular soil cultivation to encourage biodiversity.
The vintage
2022 in Burgundy is broadly described as a warm, sunny vintage. These favourable weather conditions led to high levels of ripeness, yielding rich, concentrated berries.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand, followed by rigorous sorting. To craft this Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru "Clos Saint-Jean" 2022, the grapes are destemmed and then gently macerated with measured punch-downs and pump-overs to extract colour and soften the tannins. The wine is then aged on fine lees for 12 to 15 months, with a proportion of new oak barrels of between 25% and 35%.
