Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of IDDA Sicilia Bianco 2024 by Gaja
Tasting
Appearance
This wine reveals a beautiful white colour with luminous reflections.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of citrus fruits such as lemon, orange and grapefruit, harmoniously blended with stone fruits like ripe peach, nectarine and apricot. Delicate floral hints of wisteria and orange blossom intertwine with more complex nuances of almond paste, melon and subtle hydrocarbon accents.
Palate
The attack reveals flavours of tropical and stone fruits, notably peach, passion fruit and papaya. The palate offers a firm texture, supported by pronounced minerality and vibrant acidity. The influence of oak remains perfectly integrated. The finish, persistent and crisp, stands out for its lovely saline concentration and light notes of tangy citrus.
Food and wine pairings
This white wine pairs wonderfully with Mediterranean cuisine, seafood, white-fleshed fish or shellfish. It also goes very well with light seafood pasta dishes, grilled Mediterranean vegetables, as well as mild cheeses such as a young goat's cheese or fresh cow's milk cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif.
Serving and cellaring
Blessed with a fine ageing potential thanks to its structure and acidity, this 2024 vintage can be enjoyed in its youth and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2030.
The mineral and saline expression of a white wine from the Sicilia appellation
The estate
Located in the heart of Sicily, the IDDA by Gaja estate explores the potential of the volcano's southern slopes. The name "IDDA", meaning "she" in the local dialect, pays a vibrant tribute to the volcanic mountain, reflecting the strong identity of this 20-hectare estate.
The vineyard
The vines used to produce this wine from the Sicilia appellation extend across the southern and south-western slopes of Mount Etna, between 600 and 800 metres in altitude, in the municipalities of Biancavilla and Belpasso. This geographical position provides a warmer and drier microclimate. The soils, of volcanic origin, vary from one plot to another: those of Biancavilla are ancient and light-coloured, while those of Belpasso are darker, porous and rich in volcanic rocks, giving the wine its unique mineral character.
The vintage
The 2024 year was shaped by specific climatic conditions throughout the growing season, including a particular distribution of rainfall, temperature variations and an intensity of sunshine that directly influenced the vegetative cycle. These meteorological elements favoured a ripening of the berries marked by a strong identity tied to this specific year.
Winemaking and ageing
Production begins with cold pressing of whole bunches in order to extract the aromas delicately while avoiding bitterness. After static clarification, fermentation takes place at cool controlled temperatures, between 18 and 20°C. It is carried out simultaneously in two types of vessels: 80% in stainless steel tanks and 20% in ten-hectolitre oak barrels. In order to preserve the natural acidity and aromatic freshness, malolactic fermentation is avoided, and bottling takes place the following spring.
Grape variety
This wine is made exclusively from Carricante, a white grape variety native to the region.
