A complex, structured great red wine from the Santa Ynez Valley

The estate

Owned by Stan Kroenke, who also owns the iconic Screaming Eagle estate and Domaine Bonneau du Martray in Burgundy, Jonata is a benchmark among California's great wines. The Jonata estate lies within the AVA (American Viticultural Area) of Ballard Canyon in the Santa Ynez Valley appellation, in the Central Coast region of California.

The vineyard

Of the 237 hectares acquired by Stan Kroenke, around 34 hectares are planted with vines. Jonata stands out for its distinctive soils, predominantly sandy in the Ballard Canyon AVA and in the Careaga area. The Jonata vineyard showcases a range of grape varieties inspired by the blending traditions of Bordeaux and the Rhône Valley. Syrah, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot have all been successfully planted.

The vintage
Despite the long drought that California experienced in 2016, the Jonata estate brought in a superb harvest. Picking stretched over a period of 3 weeks. The 2016 vintage offered particularly exceptional conditions for the Bordeaux varieties that go into the Todos blend. Like La Sangre de Jonata, Todos 2016 is a true success for the estate.

Blend
Todos 2016 by Jonata is crafted from a blend of Syrah (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), Petite Sirah (11%), Petit Verdot (8%), Sangiovese (5%), Merlot (2%), Cabernet Franc (2%), Viognier (1%), Sauvignon Blanc (1%) and Sémillon (1%).

Tasting
Nose
Displaying remarkable aromatic balance, the bouquet unfolds across several registers. Notes of blackberry and black cherry mingle with hints of black truffle. The nose then moves on to floral notes reminiscent of violet, along with warmer tones evoking a five-spice blend lifted by the freshness of pepper. The aromatic bouquet fills the nose with notes of black fruit, while subtly smoky hints complete the picture.

Palate
From the attack, the wine gradually reveals its ample structure, with fine tannins that coat the palate. Complex, the palate displays notes evoking earthy aromas and the taste of fruit, while seducing with its generosity and well-defined tannins that extend the pleasure of tasting long into a persistent finish.

Ageing potential
Approachable now after aeration, this magnificent vintage of Todos by Jonata can be cellared for many more years.
