The elegance and purity of a great Burgundy wine from Joseph Drouhin
The estate
Founded in 1880 by Joseph Drouhin, the House of Joseph Drouhin is a true institution in Burgundy. Spanning approximately 93 hectares across the region's most prestigious terroirs, the estate is now led by the fourth generation, with Frédéric Drouhin as chairman of the executive board, alongside Véronique, Philippe and Laurent. A pioneer in adopting environmentally responsible practices, the estate is renowned for its constant pursuit of the authentic expression of terroir, producing wines of remarkable quality and longevity.
The vineyard
This wine comes from the prestigious climat of Les Grèves, located on the mid-slope in the commune of Beaune, benefiting from an ideal east-facing exposure. The vines, some of which are up to 70 years old, thrive on soils composed of small gravel and brown earth resting on a limestone base. This terroir enjoys excellent drainage and allows for deep rooting. The vineyard is managed using organic and biodynamic methods, with a high planting density that naturally limits yields and concentrates the aromas.
The vintage
The year 2022 began with a dry, cool winter, followed by early budbreak. Spring and summer were marked by intense heat and generous sunshine, accelerating the growing cycle. Timely rainfall at the end of June and again in mid-August helped relieve the vines and preserve good acidity. The particularly early harvest yielded grapes in impeccable health, with optimal ripeness and perfect balance.
Winemaking and aging
The Beaune 1er Cru "Grèves" 2022 is crafted using a minimal-intervention approach. Following hand-harvesting in small crates, fermentation begins spontaneously through indigenous yeasts, with the proportion of whole clusters ranging from 20 to 50%. Maceration lasts two to three weeks before a gentle vertical pressing. The wine is then aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, a quarter of which are new, made from wood air-dried for three years. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
