Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Petit Smith Haut Lafitte 2025
Tasting
Nose
The bouquet reveals itself as both subtle and particularly refined. It exhales deep aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry and black cherry, delicately intertwined with notes of garrigue, licorice wood, smoked tobacco and sweet spices.
Palate
From the very first sip, the wine proves to be ample and remarkably precise. The texture is harmonious, perfectly supported by ripe, compact and chalky tannins. A beautiful mineral framework, reminiscent of damp gravel, brings great freshness and complexity to the whole. The finish, savory and mouth-watering, lingers long to seal a refined, deep and elegant wine.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine will pair wonderfully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as a fine cut of beef or lamb. It will also accompany roasted poultry, a duck breast, as well as stews with mushrooms or truffle that will echo its smoky notes.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte 2025, it is recommended to open it thirty to sixty minutes before serving. This wine offers a fine cellaring potential, allowing it to be enjoyed until around 2040.
The elegance and freshness of a great Pessac-Léognan wine by Château Smith Haut Lafitte
The estate
While the presence of vines is attested as early as 1365, the true creation of the estate dates back to 1720, when the Scottish merchant George Smith had the chartreuse built and gave the place its name. Located in Martillac, in the heart of the Bordeaux region, this 78-hectare vineyard has belonged since 1990 to Florence and Daniel Cathiard. These passionate owners have raised the estate to the very top through a pioneering bio-precision approach and major ecological innovations. Today, Château Smith Haut Lafitte shines worldwide, combining respect for its historic terroir with exceptional wine tourism.
The vineyard
The vines dedicated to this second wine, on average twelve years old, flourish on the prestigious Günzian gravel terroir typical of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The vineyard is entirely managed according to the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture, with a controlled yield of 28 hectoliters per hectare to guarantee optimal concentration and quality of the grapes.
Winemaking and aging
The making of Petit Smith Haut Lafitte 2025 begins with a rigorous double sorting of the bunches, before and after destemming. Vinification takes place with whole berries, partially incorporating whole bunches, within the stealth positive-energy cellar, renowned for its innovative CO₂ recycling system. Extractions are carried out gently through punch-downs and pump-overs, followed by long macerations between 26 and 28 °C, adapted to each vat to preserve the balance. Aging then continues for fourteen months in barrels, including 10% new oak, all crafted by the estate's in-house cooperage.
Grape varieties
This wine comes from a blend composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.
