Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Beaune 1er Cru "Grèves" Famille Gagey 2018
Tasting
Appearance
Bright and clear, the wine reveals a hue ranging from deep ruby to garnet, adorned with subtle purple highlights in its youth.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is rich and complex. It opens on intense aromas of ripe red and black fruits such as black cherry, raspberry and blackberry, enhanced by floral notes of peony and violet. Aeration reveals delicate spicy touches, a discreet oakiness evoking vanilla and toasted bread, as well as nuances of undergrowth and fine leather.
Palate
The attack is clean and fleshy, offering a dense texture without any heaviness. The palate is supported by firm, finely grained tannins, perfectly balanced by a beautiful acidity that brings freshness. The finish is long and persistent, marked by a return of fruity and spicy notes.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine pairs wonderfully with traditional gastronomy, such as beef bourguignon, roasted red meats, duck confit or poultry in sauce. It also goes very well with Mediterranean-inspired dishes such as tagine with prunes, mushroom risottos, as well as washed-rind Burgundian cheeses or semi-hard pressed cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
For optimal tasting, it is advisable to serve this Beaune 1er Cru "Grèves" Famille Gagey 2018 at a temperature between 15 and 16°C. Endowed with a beautiful structure, this wine can be enjoyed now but has a cellaring potential that will allow it to evolve favourably until around 2030.
The elegance and complexity of a Premier Cru from Beaune
The estate
Founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, the Louis Jadot House is a true institution located in the heart of the Beaune appellation. This emblematic estate of the Burgundy region stands out for its historical expertise. Historically linked to the Gagey family, who are deeply involved in the creation of the wines, the estate is today chaired by Thomas Seiter. With a vast vineyard extending over the finest terroirs, the estate distinguishes itself through its ability to combine tradition, respect for the environment and international influence. The house produces wines that remain faithful to their climats, recognised for their remarkable consistency.
The vineyard
This red wine from Beaune comes from the famous Premier Cru climat "Les Grèves", located in the eponymous village. The vines flourish on the steep slopes of Mont Batois, benefiting from excellent exposure and optimal natural drainage. The terroir is characterised by light, friable and sandy soils, strewn with gravel. The house favours environmentally respectful viticulture, limiting chemical inputs, working the soils mechanically and promoting biodiversity to allow the terroir to express itself fully.
The vintage
The 2018 vintage was marked by overall warm and dry weather conditions. This sunny climate made it possible to reach high levels of ripeness. Thanks to rigorous work in the vineyards, particularly through careful management of the foliage and yields, the harvested grapes retained a beautiful balance, avoiding any heaviness while offering wonderful concentration.
Winemaking and aging
To craft this Beaune 1er Cru "Grèves" Famille Gagey 2018, the harvest is carried out by hand in small crates in order to preserve the berries. After careful sorting and destemming, vinification begins with a cold pre-fermentation maceration, followed by fermentation in vats with regular punching down and pumping over. The wine is then aged for approximately 15 months in oak barrels, one third of which are new, sourced exclusively from the house's own cooperage. The wine is finally fined and filtered before bottling.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
