Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for Mas Jullien "Le Trescol" 2022

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a dark red hue verging on garnet, with a slight translucency reflecting its remarkable freshness.

Nose
The nose opens with a vibrant fruity expression, dominated by black cherry and plum. It then reveals spicy notes reminiscent of Mediterranean scrubland, before evolving towards more complex aromas of black tea, undergrowth and subtle touches of earth and mushroom.

Palate
From the very first sip, the palate is supple, vibrant and particularly juicy. It offers an elegant, linear structure, underpinned by powdery, perfectly integrated tannins. The palate unfolds flavours of black cherry, wild plum, white pepper and dried rose petals, all carried by lovely acidity through to a long, lingering finish.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with grilled red meats, game or slow-cooked dishes such as rabbit terrine or quail stuffed with mushrooms. Its freshness and herbaceous notes also make it the ideal companion to Mediterranean cuisine featuring roasted vegetables, or subtly spiced poultry.

Service and storage

For optimal enjoyment in its youth, it is advisable to open the bottle an hour in advance or decant this 2022 vintage one to two hours before serving, at a temperature between 15 and 16°C. This wine can be enjoyed now, but will continue to evolve and can be cellared until around 2032.

The elegance and freshness of a singular wine from the Languedoc

The estate

Founded in 1985 by Olivier Jullien, then just twenty years old, Mas Jullien is a pioneering estate located in Jonquières, in the Languedoc. Still led today by its founder, alongside Jean-Philippe Granier, the estate spans around eighteen hectares. A true driving force behind the region's qualitative revival, the estate stands out for its exacting philosophy, applying organic and biodynamic methods without seeking official certification. Mas Jullien is now recognised worldwide for its authentic cuvées, reflecting the complexity of its high-altitude terroirs.

The vineyard

The grapes for this cuvée come from plots located at over four hundred metres in altitude in the IGP Aveyron. Facing north-west, these gently sloping vines flourish on mid-hillside terrain, between the Tarn valley and the surrounding peaks. This terroir benefits from a cool microclimate and deep, well-drained soils, both acidic and limestone-rich, with great mineral richness.

Winemaking and aging

The result of a collaboration with winemaker Olivier Michel, the "Le Trescol" 2022 cuvée is crafted from hand-harvested grapes, allowing for rigorous bunch selection. Vinification follows a traditional method in large vats, without the use of new oak, so as to preserve the brightness of the fruit. The wine is then aged for a period of twelve to eighteen months, sometimes beginning in barrels, before continuing its maturation in the thousand-year-old underground cellars of Compeyre. These cavities, ventilated by natural fissures known as fleurines, offer a constant temperature ideal for refining the wine.
