Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Passionnément is a blend of the best lots in the cellar, this year from barrels sourced from Andy Beckstoffer’s To Kalon and Missouri Hopper vineyards. A powerful, resonant wine, the 2012 offers generous notes of dark cherry, plum, espresso, violet, grilled herbs and camphor. It is a classic Morlet wine from this era. Most importantly, the 2012 is developing beautifully in bottle.

During my tasting with Luc, I was also able to taste a few older vintages. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Passionnement is showing beautifully and has the open, sexy, seamless style of the vintage front and center. Blueberries, graphite, loads of spice, and some forest floor notes give way to a full-bodied, elegant and seamless 2012 that’s on the early edge of its drink window.

The aromatic expression and structure of a Californian red wine

The estate

Founded in 2006 by French-American couple Luc and Jodie Morlet, Morlet Family Vineyards showcases the prestigious terroirs of Sonoma County and Napa Valley. Heir to a Champagne winegrowing lineage spanning five generations, Luc Morlet, who graduated in oenology in Reims, honed his expertise at Château Dauzac in Margaux before settling in California alongside Jodie. Together, they first created vineyards dedicated to cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc before expanding their range to other grape varieties such as pinot noir and chardonnay. Acclaimed by the most renowned critics, the estate's wines enjoy universal recognition.

The wine

"Passionnément Cabernet Sauvignon 2012" is a Napa Valley wine resulting from a rigorous barrel selection from the estate's vineyards: "Coeur de Vallée", "Morlet Estate" and "Mon Chevalier".

Winemaking and aging

The grapes, hand-harvested at night, are carefully transported in small refrigerated boxes to preserve their freshness. Each cluster and each berry then undergoes meticulous hand sorting. Fermentation, carried out with indigenous yeasts, takes place in stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels, with regular punch-downs. After this stage, the wine is aged for 16 months in French oak barrels. Finally, it is bottled without fining or filtration, in order to preserve all its authenticity.
