Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Pinot Noir 2021 from Otronia

Tasting

Appearance
The colour displays a delicate ruby hue, highlighted by violet reflections.

Nose
The bouquet stands out for its mineral elegance and delicate red-fruit aromas: fresh strawberry, cherry and ripe raspberry. Spicy notes of black pepper complete this aromatic palette, alongside subtle herbal and floral nuances reminiscent of roses.

Palate
On the palate, this wine reveals a dry and fresh character. Its fine structure offers a slightly grippy texture that gives the palate definition, while maintaining balance and elegance. Lively acidity and precise fruit ripeness define this Patagonian Pinot Noir.

Food pairing

This Pinot Noir pairs wonderfully with delicate cured meats, grilled fish or fish in sauce, poultry, red meat and barbecued dishes, game, spicy cuisine, strong cheeses, as well as pasta with tomato sauce.

Serving and ageing

This Pinot Noir 2021 can be enjoyed now and will continue to develop until around 2026.

A mineral and delicate Pinot Noir from Patagonia

The estate

Founded in 2010 in Sarmiento, in the province of Chubut in Patagonia, the estate Otronia embodies the southern frontier of global viticulture, on the 45°33' parallel. Owned by Grupo Avinea and the Alejandro Bulgheroni Family Vineyards, the estate farms 52 hectares of organic vineyards spread across two plots on the edge of Lake Musters. Led by oenologist Juan Pablo Murgia, named Argentina’s best young winemaker in 2021, and with advice from Alberto Antonini, Otronia stands out for its innovative frost-protection system, which creates a protective effect, as well as for its wines with remarkable natural acidity—true expressions of an extreme terroir.

The vineyard

This Pinot Noir comes from two different plots in the Sarmiento region of Patagonia: Paico (Lot 1) and Sierra Silva (Lot 82). These vineyards are located in the province of Chubut, near Lake Musters, in an extreme winegrowing area in the Rio Negro Valley. Farmed organically, the vines benefit from a unique Patagonian climate marked by wide temperature variations and exceptional brightness.

Winemaking and ageing

The Pinot Noir 2021 harvest was carried out by hand in mid-March for the Paico plot (15 March) and at the end of March for Sierra Silva (20 March). Vinification took place in French oak vats with 50% whole clusters. After completion of malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for 22 months in untoasted large French oak casks. Bottling took place in January 2023.

Grape variety

This Argentinian red wine is 100% Pinot Noir.
