An elegant, structured Barbaresco from Piedmont, crafted from the prestigious Gallina cru
The estate
Founded in 1981 by Ugo Lequio in Neive, the estate spans six hectares of vineyards in the Barbaresco area, in the heart of Piedmont. Ugo Lequio favors quality over quantity. Still run today by its founder, the estate is recognized for its philosophy of giving these Italian wines a long rest before release, allowing them to develop serenely in bottle. This patient, demanding approach has earned Ugo Lequio a strong reputation among benchmark Barbaresco producers.
The vineyard
This Barbaresco comes from the prestigious Gallina cru, located on the hill of the same name in Neive. This historic terroir enjoys a due-south exposure and rests on clay-limestone soils mixed with gray-blue marls and sands. The vines, planted between 1953 and 1971, sit at elevations ranging from 170 to 250 meters. These old vines produce concentrated grapes that fully express the unique character of this exceptional terroir.
The vintage
The 2015 vintage is considered excellent in Piedmont. Following a mild winter and a wet spring that replenished water reserves, the summer was hot and sunny. These ideal weather conditions allowed the nebbiolo to ripen optimally, giving rise to sunny, structured wines with remarkable aging potential.
Winemaking and aging
Barbaresco Gallina 2015 is vinified in the traditional way. After a 15- to 18-day maceration in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, the wine is aged for 20 months in 25-hectoliter oak casks. This respectful aging method preserves the expression of the fruit while adding structure and complexity. The wine then rests for 6 months in bottle before release.
