Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Riesling "Clos Liebenberg" Monopole 2022 by Valentin Zusslin
Tasting notes
Colour
This white wine from Alsace reveals a clear, brilliant colour with subtle greenish highlights.
Nose
Remarkably delicate, the aromatic bouquet precisely reveals notes of white flowers mingled with hints of citrus zest.
Palate
Carried by a straight, focused acidity, the palate offers a texture of great finesse and length. Deep and juicy, it stretches towards a crystalline finish, enhanced by a beautiful minerality.
Food and wine pairing
Ideal with delicate seafood, this wine pairs wonderfully with stuffed crab, smoked salmon or even caviar. It also goes perfectly with refined Asian cuisine, such as sushi or sashimi.
Serving and cellaring
For optimal enjoyment, it is recommended to serve this wine at a temperature of around 12°C. It can be enjoyed now, but will continue to evolve favourably until approximately 2032.
An exceptional terroir in the heart of the region
The estate
Founded in 1691 by Jodocus Cislé, Domaine Valentin Zusslin is a historic figure of the Alsace vineyards. Located in Orschwihr, this family-owned estate extends over approximately 16 hectares. Today, the thirteenth generation, embodied by Marie and Jean-Paul Zusslin, is at the helm of the estate. Pioneers in their environmental approach, they perpetuate ancestral expertise while cultivating their vines biodynamically since 1997. Renowned for the excellence and precision of its cuvées, the estate stands out for its regenerative viticulture and deep respect for its terroirs.
The vineyard
This wine comes from the Clos Liebenberg, a monopole lieu-dit of about five hectares perched at the top of a south-east-facing hillside, at nearly 380 metres above sea level. The Riesling vines, planted in 1972, thrive on marl and sandstone soils. A veritable haven of biodiversity, this Alsatian terroir is farmed biodynamically and incorporates agro-viti-forestry practices, with the presence of beehives, orchards and hedges, as well as the use of animal traction.
Vinification and ageing
After exclusively hand-harvested grapes, the fruit undergoes a long, gentle pressing lasting eight to ten hours. The wine is then aged for an extended period on fine lees in large wooden foudres, preserving aromatic purity while adding texture.
Grape variety
Riesling (100%).
