Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the 2nd Pez 2023 from Château de Pez
Tasting
The 2nd Pez 2023 is generous and approachable. Its creamy texture carries through to a fine, lingering finish, supported by ripe tannins. The Merlot wraps around the structure of the Cabernet Sauvignon, while the Petit Verdot adds a touch of spice.
Serving and cellaring
As the second wine of Château de Pez, the 2nd Pez 2023 shows a more immediately generous style than the estate's grand vin, with a slightly less imposing structure. It is therefore designed to be enjoyed earlier.
A Saint-Estèphe from Château de Pez, with a Generous Character and Ripe Tannins
The estate
Founded in 1452 by Jean de Briscos, Château de Pez is among the oldest estates in the Médoc and in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, in the Bordeaux region. Owned by the Champagne house Louis Roederer since 1995, it is run by Nicolas Glumineau, Managing Director. Its vineyard extends over a single gravelly plateau and is worked on a plot-by-plot basis. The estate, certified HVE Level 3, produces wines that remain approachable.
The vineyard
This Saint-Estèphe wine comes from the young vines of Château de Pez, planted on a single, unbroken plateau of gravel, arranged in well-exposed gentle rises around the château. This gravel rests on a clay-limestone subsoil, overlooking the Gironde estuary. The gently rolling terrain promotes natural drainage of the soils. The proximity of the estuary protects the vineyard from frost, hail is rare, and the wind helps dry the foliage.
The vines are trained using the Guyot-Poussard pruning method, with soils managed essentially by mechanical means and with organic fertilizers. The estate practises sustainable viticulture. Cover crops between the rows, hedgerows serving as ecological corridors and beehives complete this approach in support of biodiversity. Part of the vineyard is also farmed biodynamically on an experimental basis.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage was warm and contrasting in Bordeaux. The start of the season, rather damp, called for great vigilance in the vineyards, while the end of the cycle, drier, allowed the grapes to ripen under good conditions.
Winemaking and ageing
The 2nd Pez 2023 is crafted with the same technical rigor as the château's grand vin. Vinification is carried out plot by plot, in order to preserve the personality of each parcel. It takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and wooden vats.
Grape varieties
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.
