Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for Angelo Gaja's Sugarille 2019

Tasting

Colour
Deep, dark red in colour, the visual appearance reveals a beautiful concentration.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet proves complex, blending aromas of black berries, blackberries, Amarena cherries and ripe plums. These are joined by notes of tar, liquorice, tobacco and clove, along with herbaceous touches of sage and balsamic, as well as mineral nuances of crushed stone.

Palate
The palate offers a silky, polished texture, carried by a dense structure of tangy red and black fruit. Notes of saline minerals and exotic spices enrich the whole. The tannins, still young and angular, find balance with a refreshing acidity, leading to a remarkably persistent finish.

Food and wine pairing

This wine pairs ideally with rich, textured dishes capable of balancing its tannic structure. It goes perfectly with stewed or braised game such as wild boar, guinea fowl or duck, as well as roasted veal and pork. Pasta with a rich sauce, duck breast or a well-aged Pecorino cheese are also excellent choices. For a bold contrast, a beef tartare with white truffle proves very interesting.

Service and storage

Blessed with great ageing potential, this Sugarille 2019 can be cellared and will be at its best from around 2027 to 2039.

The mineral elegance and depth of a Brunello di Montalcino wine

The estate

Founded in 1859 in Piedmont, the family business experienced a decisive turning point under the impetus of Angelo Gaja, a true pioneer of modern Italian winemaking. In 1994, the family expanded into Tuscany with the acquisition of the historic Pieve Santa Restituta estate. Today, the estate is run by Angelo Gaja, his wife Lucia, and their children Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni. Renowned worldwide, the family cultivates excellence through sustainable practices, championing the pure expression of each terroir.

The vineyard

This wine comes from the Sugarille vineyard site, a historic location whose winemaking heritage has been documented since 1541. Located in the south-western part of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, this vineyard benefits from a south-western exposure and natural ventilation coming from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The vines thrive on pale, stony soils rich in limestone, ideal for growing the local grape variety, and are farmed according to environmentally respectful methods.

The vintage

2019 offered particularly favourable growing conditions in Tuscany, giving rise to grapes of remarkable quality and distinction.

Winemaking and ageing

After the primary fermentation, this Sugarille 2019 undergoes six months of maturation in French oak barrels aged two years or more. The wine is then transferred to large Slavonian oak casks to complete the two-year period of ageing in wood required by regulations. Finally, it rests in concrete tanks for a further six to twelve months before bottling, allowing all its components to fully integrate.
