The estate
Created in the late 2000s by Francine Picard, the Au Pied du Mont Chauve estate highlights her family's historic winegrowing heritage in Burgundy. Located on the prestigious villages of the Côte de Beaune, the property covers around 35 hectares of vines cultivated according to the principles of biodynamics and agroecology. Today, Francine Picard, who represents the third generation at the helm of the estate, crafts precise, environmentally respectful terroir wines, placing the property among the region's leading benchmarks.
The vineyard
This wine comes from the famous Climat "Les Chaumées", located in the village of Chassagne-Montrachet. The estate cultivates a half-hectare plot of vines aged around 50 years there. Ideally facing south-east, this mid-slope terroir lies on clay-limestone soils rich in marl, providing optimal drainage. The vineyard is managed with a rigorous environmental approach, including natural grass cover and the use of biodynamic preparations to preserve soil vitality.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage stands out for its paradoxical climatic conditions. Although the year was overall the warmest ever recorded, the summer period remained relatively temperate, allowing a beautiful acidity to be preserved. The harvest began on September 1st under a heatwave, requiring a swift picking to maintain the balance of the berries. The generosity of the vine called for green harvesting and rigorous sorting to retain only the fruit that had reached optimal maturity.
Vinification and ageing
To craft this Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru "Les Chaumées" 2023, the grapes are hand-harvested and then destemmed. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Ageing then takes place over around 15 months in French oak barrels, including 25% new wood.
Grape variety
100% pinot noir.
