Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of Borgogno's Barolo 2022

Tasting notes

Appearance
Revealing a distinctly ruby hue, the robe is enhanced by delicate garnet reflections.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of cherry and plum, accompanied by a herbaceous touch. It then reveals floral aromas of rose petals and hawthorn, intertwined with scents of pomegranate, lemon zest and subtle mineral nuances.

Palate
With a medium to full body, the palate offers generous and tender proportions. The tannins, perfectly ripe and well integrated, structure the whole with elegance. The finish stands out for its persistence, grace and complexity, underlined by subtle oak notes.

Food and wine pairings

This red wine from Italy pairs wonderfully with feathered game (pheasant, partridge, wild duck) or beef, whether served raw as tartare, braised or roasted. It also enhances aged cheeses such as Castelmagno or Parmigiano Reggiano, as well as refined dishes featuring Alba white truffle or mushrooms.

Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate its potential, this Barolo 2022 can rest in the cellar to be enjoyed until around 2037.

An elegant and expressive wine from Piedmont

The estate

Founded in 1761 by Bartolomeo Borgogno, the historic estate Borgogno stands as one of the oldest in the Piedmont region of Italy. Located in the heart of the village of Barolo, the estate covers 60 hectares, of which 52 are dedicated to viticulture. Today led by Andrea Farinetti, following the acquisition by the Farinetti family in 2007, the House perpetuates a unique traditional savoir-faire. It stands out in particular for its singular practice of keeping half of its production in the cellar for several decades, thereby building a collection of older vintages of rare scope.

The vineyard

The vineyard spans 52 hectares in production, mainly located on the prestigious terroirs of the Barolo appellation, including historic plots such as Cannubi, Liste and Fossati. The vines flourish on complex soils composed of clay-limestone marls, sand and silt. Cultivated according to organic farming principles, the estate forbids synthetic chemical products in favour of natural methods, thereby promoting biodiversity and grass cover to preserve the balance of the ecosystem.

The vintage

The 2022 vintage was marked by a drought that began in 2021 and particularly high summer temperatures. However, the end of August and the month of September offered ideal conditions, combining sunny days with cool nights. This temperature contrast allowed the berries to reach optimal phenolic ripeness while preserving fine acidity, leading to a late harvest between the end of October and the beginning of November.

Winemaking and aging

For this Barolo 2022, fermentation begins spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts in large concrete vats, with an extended skin maceration of thirty to sixty days. Manual punch-downs and pump-overs are carried out as needed. After malolactic fermentation, the wine benefits from ageing of at least four years in large Slavonian oak casks, encouraging slow maturation. The refining process concludes with a minimum of six months' rest in bottle.
