Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Corton Grand Cru 2022 Chandon de Briailles
Tasting
Colour
The colour reveals a bright pale gold to vivid yellow hue, flecked with subtle green highlights.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with a pronounced minerality reminiscent of flint, before releasing scents of yellow stone fruits such as peach and apricot, subtly wrapped in buttery, honeyed notes.
Palate
The palate offers beautiful richness and structured density, perfectly balanced by fine acidity and the saline minerality typical of its limestone terroir. The finish is fresh and elegant, with a delicate complexity brought by oak ageing.
Food and Wine Pairing
This white wine pairs wonderfully with shellfish such as lobster or langoustine in a creamy sauce, as well as with roasted white-fleshed fish. It also pairs beautifully with foie gras, poultry in a cream and mushroom sauce, or aged cheeses such as Comté and fresh goat cheese.
Service and Storage
For an optimal tasting of the Corton Grand Cru 2022, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 12 and 14°C, ideally in wide-bowled glasses. Allowing it to breathe for 15 to 30 minutes before serving is recommended to release all its aromas. This wine can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2035.
Other Characteristics
This wine has an alcohol content of 13.5%.
The Mineral Purity of a Corton Grand Cru in Burgundy
The Estate
Founded in 1834 by the eponymous countess, Domaine Chandon de Briailles is an essential reference in Burgundy. Located in Savigny-lès-Beaune, the estate spans 13.7 hectares. Still owned by the same family, the estate is now led by Count and Countess Aymard-Claude de Nicolay, with day-to-day management handled by their children, Claude and François de Nicolay. A true pioneer, the vineyard stands out for its full conversion to biodynamics and its exclusive use of horse ploughing, reflecting a deep commitment to environmental respect.
The Vineyard
The plots dedicated to this Corton lie on the famous hill of the same name, at an altitude ranging from 270 to 320 metres. The terroir consists of nodular limestone rich in iron oxide and Bathonian marls, resting on a Jurassic sedimentary bedrock. The vines, planted in 1980, 1991 and 1998, benefit from environmentally respectful practices, including horse ploughing to prevent soil compaction and green harvesting to control yields.
The Vintage
The year 2022 stood out for particularly hot and dry weather conditions, from spring through to the harvest period. After a spring with little rainfall, the summer was marked by intense heat and severe drought, leading to accelerated berry ripening. Faced with these conditions, the vines showed remarkable resilience, yielding fruit of excellent health that required minimal sorting during an early harvest carried out in the morning.
Winemaking and Aging
After hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo gentle pneumatic pressing followed by light settling. Fermentation of the Corton Grand Cru 2022 starts spontaneously through indigenous yeasts, in 200-litre oak barrels. The wine is then aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with an almost negligible proportion of new wood. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, without any lees stirring, before bottling without filtration.
