Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Toasty and direct, with dark plum and blackberry compote flavors, cloaked in warm ganache and roasted vanilla accents. Broad in feel, weighed down a touch by the toasty notes on the finish. Drink now through 2022.

Decanter

Fresh black fruit aromas on the nose. Juicy and ripe, with crunchy red fruit and delicate freshness. The tannins are fine but present, slightly grippy with a mineral tang. Well-balanced, even if a bit lean, the finish is lovely with menthol freshness.

James Suckling

Blackberry, blueberry and floral aromas follow through to a full body, tight, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink in 2023. A château to watch in the future.

Soft and polished, with layers of sweet, ripe, juicy plums, this medium-bodied, elegant, easy-to-like wine effortlessly serves up sweet red cherries and licorice. You can enjoy it with just a few years of age.

La RVF

Dense texture, ample tannins without dryness. Toasty, smoky notes, yet the fruit is never far behind. This velvety, expressive style suits the terroir beautifully, near the Pomerol plateau.

Yves Beck

Garnet red with violet highlights. An intense, complex, subtle bouquet with many facets. In fact, it unsettles me by the way it reveals itself… I have never known Chauvin’s nose like this. I do, however, recall some excellent vintages, even in difficult Right Bank years, such as 1996 for example, when Chauvin was brilliant. Kudos to those who made this wine. As for 2016, I’m moved by Chauvin’s many strengths; you are right to believe in what you are doing. Above all, don’t change a thing. On the palate, Chauvin has little choice but to confirm the bouquet’s qualities. The wine has breadth, pedigree, fruit, and balance. In fact, it shines through its ability to let nothing stick out while remaining authentic. There is a soul in this wine—there is love, passion… you can feel it and it moves me. Congratulations on this brilliant demonstration.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Dark, intense, beautiful, and vibrant colour. Moderately aromatic nose with fresh, delicately creamy fruit. Meticulous from the attack, very refined in texture, fragrant, the wine glides across the palate, pleasant and suave, leading to good length with no hard edges. Lovely floral aftertaste on the finish. It’s very good.

some leafy and herbal notes, classic structure, red plum and dark berries, mild spices, ripe tannin, medium to long finish.

Description

Chateau Chauvin 2016: A complex and concentrated Saint-Emilion

Classified Growth in the Saint-Emilion appellation, Chateau Chauvin is produced on a 15 hectare vineyard. The vines are on average 30 years old, and planted on soil composed of sandy-clay. The vineyard has 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon planted. Chateau Chauvin 2016 is aged in oak barrels (60% are new) over a period of 15-18 months.

Chateau Chauvin 2016 had a homogenous budding period, thanks to a mild winter and lots of rain. Spring was humid with cool temperatures, this delayed the vines development. Flowering took place in June thanks to a short dry spell. August was hot and drought-stricken. The terroir of Chateau Chauvin reacted perfectly to the weather conditions. The grapes matured perfectly in mid-September, after a drought-ending rain. Harvest took place from October 6th-20th.

Chateau Chauvin 2016 has a striking colour. The nose is characterised by its fruity aromas. The tannins are silky and elegant. Chateau Chauvin 2016 is fresh with a beautiful tension in the mouth
