Decanter

Tannic but chewy and juicy too with the two almost balancing out ending with a wet stone, slate, flint and graphite note. Charming in a way, plenty of bramble fruit, will be nice once the tannins and oak settle. A little flat.

Jane Anson

Brambly fruits, blackberry and loganberry, starts out with a ton of promise, with well judged bitter almond and fennel notes that will smooth and soften over ageing. Plenty of material to age. Yield 35 hl/ha.

Description

A generous and elegant Haut-Médoc

The estate

Founded in the 18th century under the name Cousran, Château Coufran took its definitive name in 1924, the year it was acquired by Louis Miailhe. Nestled in the Haut-Médoc in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, this Bordeaux estate spans 68 hectares of gravelly soils along the banks of the Gironde estuary. Passed down from father to son for a century, it remains the stronghold of an illustrious family of Bordeaux wine merchants. Coufran's distinctive character lies in the predominance of Merlot, a bold choice initiated by Louis Miailhe himself. This rare feature in the Haut-Médoc has earned the château its reputation as the "Pomerol of the Médoc".

The vineyard

The Château Coufran vineyard is rooted in an exceptional Haut-Médoc terroir, combining gravel and marl resting on a clay subsoil. This geological diversity, close to the Gironde estuary, benefits from a microclimate conducive to beautifully ripe berries. With vines averaging fifty years of age, the vineyard delivers a remarkable aromatic concentration.

Winemaking and aging

The harvest, carried out both by hand and mechanically, ensures a meticulous selection of the finest grapes. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Aging then continues for twelve months in French oak barrels. Alcohol content: 13.69% vol.

Blend

This Château Coufran 2025 is composed of a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.
