Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Mercurey Village "Clos de la Maladière" 2023 Château de Chamirey
Tasting
Colour
The colour reveals a bright, luminous red hue, adorned with delicate ruby highlights.
Nose
From the outset, the bouquet expresses fresh red fruit aromas, underscored by subtle spicy and vanilla notes reminiscent of liquorice and clove. With aeration, chalky mineral nuances, undergrowth and mushroom notes come to enrich this olfactory palette.
Palate
The attack is juicy and fruity, introducing a silky, refined texture. The tannins are perfectly integrated, offering a lovely balance between roundness and acidity. The finish, remarkably persistent, stands out for its fruity freshness and hint of salinity.
Food and Wine Pairing
The estate suggests pairing this red wine with a traditional Burgundian fondue or, for a more adventurous option, a chocolate cake. It will also pair beautifully with roasted poultry, a mushroom risotto or a platter of fine cured meats.
Service and Storage
The Mercurey Village "Clos de la Maladière" 2023 can be enjoyed now, but it will continue to develop its complexity through to around 2031. For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature of between 13 and 14°C, after decanting for one to two hours.
Other Characteristics
This wine has a moderate alcohol content of around 13%.
The Elegance and Complexity of a Clay-Limestone Terroir in the Côte Chalonnaise
The Estate
Built at the beginning of the 18th century, Château de Chamirey truly came into its own in 1934, the year the brand was created under the impetus of the Marquis de Jouennes, who decided to bottle his wines at the estate. Located in Burgundy, this emblematic estate today oversees a vineyard of 37 hectares. Currently run by the fifth generation, represented by Amaury and Aurore Devillard, the estate is distinguished by its respectful approach to terroir and its sustainable winegrowing practices, producing wines renowned for their purity and freshness.
The Vineyard
This wine comes from three plots spanning 1.36 hectares within the Mercurey appellation. Planted between 1959 and 1979, these old vines benefit from a north-to-south exposure on a gentle slope. The terroir consists of clay-limestone soils, with a clear predominance of clay, dotted with small pebbles on the surface that promote drainage and heat retention.
The Vintage
The year 2023 was marked by unpredictable weather conditions. After a mild winter, spring proved unstable, combining frost risks with irregular rainfall. The summer season also experienced atypical temperature variations. Despite these challenges, the growing cycle was successfully completed, producing berries of lovely ripeness while retaining natural acidity.
Winemaking and Aging
The grapes destined for the Mercurey Village "Clos de la Maladière" 2023 are hand-harvested and hand-sorted. After destemming, a cold pre-fermentation maceration of four to six days is carried out. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts, accompanied by regular punching down over roughly a fortnight. Aging then takes place for 16 months in 400-litre Burgundy oak barrels (15% of which are new), before concluding with two months' rest in stainless steel tanks. The wine is bottled without filtration.
Grape Variety
100% Pinot Noir.
