Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Champeaux" 2024 from Château de Marsannay

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a red hue with a delicate intensity characteristic of this cool vintage.

Nose

The bouquet opens with a pure and fragrant expression of red fruits, blending cherry and violet with subtle spicy notes.

Palate

Elegant and crisp, the palate offers a light to medium-bodied profile. It is supported by firm yet silky tannins, enhanced by a fine mineral and saline tension that brings great freshness.

Food and wine pairings

This French red wine pairs beautifully with flavorful meats such as braised game birds, roast venison, or a fine cut of beef. It also complements perfectly coq au vin, veal with mushrooms, freshwater fish in sauce, as well as aged cheeses such as Époisses or Comté.

Serving and cellaring

With strong aging potential, this Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Champeaux" 2024 can be cellared until around 2039, when it will reveal the full complexity of its tertiary aromas.

The mineral elegance of a great Gevrey-Chambertin terroir

The estate

Established in 1990, the Château de Marsannay is a key reference in Burgundy, France. Acquired in 2012 by its current owner Olivier Halley, the estate oversees a 34-hectare vineyard farmed organically. Under the guidance of technical director Sylvain Pabion, the estate stands out for its strong agroecological philosophy and meticulous parcel-based approach. The aim is to reveal the authentic identity of each terroir through gentle, low-intervention winemaking.

The vineyard

The "Champeaux" climat is located at the northern edge of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, at an altitude ranging from 300 to 350 meters. The estate’s plot benefits from an eastern exposure and a particularly cool microclimate. The vines draw their character from shallow brown clay-limestone soils, resting on a distinctive fossil-rich entroque limestone bedrock. To preserve the structure of these demanding soils, the estate notably favors horse plowing.

The vintage

The year 2024 was marked by particularly challenging weather conditions. A very mild winter led to early budbreak, making the vines vulnerable to frost episodes in April. This was followed by a long period of rainfall and cool temperatures that disrupted flowering and maintained constant disease pressure. Fortunately, the return of warm, dry weather in August helped restart ripening ahead of a very condensed harvest in mid-September.

Winemaking and aging

For this Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Champeaux" 2024, the berries are fully destemmed. The process begins with cold maceration, followed by fermentation with indigenous yeasts, favoring gentle extraction by infusion. Aging then takes place over approximately twelve months in oak barrels (including 75% new oak), followed by five months of refinement in stainless steel tanks.

Grape variety

100% pinot noir.
