Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Château Duhart-Milon 1995
Tasting Notes
Appearance
The colour reveals a moderate garnet hue, with subtle brick-red highlights visible at the rim of the glass.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with scents of well-ripened red fruits, such as strawberry, accompanied by mineral and spice nuances. As it evolves, seductive tertiary notes of tobacco, supple leather and cigar box emerge, underscored by delicately toasted oak.
Palate
Medium-bodied, the palate offers a supple texture and remarkably refined extraction. Refreshing acidity balances discreet fruit aromas and subtle tarry hints, leading to an elegant finish marked by cigar box accents.
Food and Wine Pairings
This red wine pairs wonderfully with roasted or grilled red meats, such as herb-crusted rack of lamb, prime rib or duck breast. It also enhances sauced dishes featuring forest mushrooms like porcini or morels, as well as pressed, cooked-rind cheeses such as Comté.
Serving and Cellaring
To fully enjoy the Château Duhart-Milon 1995, serving at around 16°C is recommended. A brief decanting just before tasting allows it to breathe gently. This wine has reached its optimal maturity window and was best enjoyed up until around 2014.
The Classic Elegance of a Great Pauillac Wine
The Estate
Born from land historically linked to the Lafite seigneury, Château Duhart-Milon officially came into being in the 1830s under the impetus of the Castéja family. Located in Pauillac, in the celebrated Bordeaux region of France, it stands out as the sole fourth growth (quatrième grand cru classé) of its appellation. Acquired in 1962 by Domaines Barons de Rothschild, the estate has undergone a profound qualitative renaissance. Today, under the direction of Saskia de Rothschild, the property is distinguished by its strong environmental commitment and produces wines renowned for their precision and finesse.
The Vineyard
Spanning 76 hectares in an almost single block, the vineyard sits on the Milon hillside, west of the Lafite plateau, at the heart of the Pauillac appellation. The vines, averaging 30 years of age, thrive on Quaternary sandy gravel soils blended with more than 10% clay. This exceptional terroir is surrounded by a rich ecosystem of woodlands, meadows and wetlands classified under Natura 2000, fostering active biodiversity and environmentally responsible viticultural practices.
The Vintage
The year 1995 stood out for its particularly favourable climatic conditions in the Médoc, which supported a steady growing cycle. The weather allowed the berries to reach excellent phenolic ripeness, with thick skins and fully lignified seeds, resulting in a healthy, high-quality harvest.
Winemaking and Ageing
The hand-harvested grapes undergo rigorous sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery. The winemaking of the Château Duhart-Milon 1995 is carried out on a plot-by-plot basis to preserve the identity of each individual lot. The wine is then aged for around 14 months in oak barrels, half of which are new, lending structure and complexity to the final blend.
Grape Varieties
This blend is composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot.
