Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Aromas of red currants, dried herbs, tobacco, and wood emerge from this medium-bodied 1999. Plum, currant, and cherry fruit, soft acidity, and light tannin suggest consumption is warranted over the next 6-7 years.

Wine Spectator

Blackberry, grilled meat and fresh mushroom aromas. Medium- to full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe tannins and a medium finish. Well done for this estate. Best after 2004. 10,000 cases made.

Vivid purple, deep at the core. Intense bouquet with surprising depth, a wonderful interplay of red and blue berries. Firm on the palate, yet with remarkably fine tannins and very good support. Clearly better vinified than previous vintages.

00: Barrel sample (17/20): A warm bouquet shaped by ripe fruit, fine smoky notes and gentle raisin nuances, bread crust, rock candy. On the palate, quite fleshy, with once again terrific aromatics; plenty of black and blue berries on the finish. A superb, long-lasting wine that, for a Grand-Puy-Ducasse, almost seems to have outdone itself. 03: Deep, dense purple, profound at the core. Intense bouquet, surprisingly deep, with a wonderful interplay between red and blue berries. Firm on the palate, yet with remarkably fine tannins and very good backbone. Clearly better vinified than earlier vintages. 17/20 2005 – 2013

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Deep dark red colour. Medium to good intensity. Bright. Nose of medium intensity. Fruity. Fresh. Fairly refined. A hint of ink. A soft attack, opening onto a juicy palate with good density and plenty of fruit. The tannins build slowly—smooth, fresh and still fruit-driven—leading to a spicy, liquorice-tinged, very juicy finish. The tannic profile recalls liquorice and the smoky note of Cabernet Sauvignon. Good length. A sappy, very successful wine.

Description

The Heritage and Elegance of a Pauillac Grand Cru

The estate

The history of Château Grand-Puy Ducasse began in 1675, when Arnaud Ducasse acquired land. Located in the heart of the Bordeaux region, the estate is unique in one respect: it is the only 1855 Grand Cru Classé to make its wines in the very centre of Pauillac, facing the Gironde estuary, in buildings erected in 1820. Today, this prestigious 40-hectare property belongs to CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of the Crédit Agricole group, which upholds the excellence and distinctive identity of this historic vineyard.

The vineyard

The vineyard covers 40 hectares and offers a true mosaic of Pauillac terroirs. Spread across three main areas, the vines thrive on eleven different soil types. To the north lie fine gravel ridges over a marl and limestone base, ideal for optimal drainage. In the centre, the historic plots benefit from gravelly-sandy soils over clay foundations. As early as 1996, the estate returned to mechanical tillage across all its plots, marking the beginning of its environmental commitment.

Winemaking and ageing

The 1999 vintage was produced before the estate's major modern restructuring. This red wine was therefore made in the property's historic facilities, built in 1820 on the town's quays. It reflects the classic expertise of the time, capturing the essence of its terroir just before the technical modernisation that came with the new millennium.

Grape varieties

Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
