Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Léoville Poyferré 2012
Tasting
Colour
The wine displays a deep red colour with dark ruby highlights.
Nose
Powerful and deeply expressive, the bouquet reveals great complexity. It opens with aromas of black and red fruits such as blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and cherry, harmoniously blended with toasty notes, spices, mocha, liquorice and graphite.
Palate
Fleshy and succulent, the palate offers a silky, velvety texture. Full and generous, it rests on fine, polished tannins, revealing well-integrated oak before stretching into a finish of remarkable length.
Food and wine pairing
This great red wine will pair beautifully with refined, flavourful dishes such as duck tournedos Rossini.
Serving and cellaring
For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine at a temperature of 17 to 18°C. Already approachable, this vintage can be enjoyed now and will continue to develop gracefully until around 2037.
A precise Saint-Julien wine with great length
The estate
Located on the Left Bank of the Bordeaux region, the estate traces its origins back to the 17th century, although Château Léoville Poyferré was officially founded in 1840. Ranked a Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, this 80-hectare estate was acquired by the Cuvelier family in 1920. Today, Sara Lecompte Cuvelier is at the helm of the property. Alongside oenologist Isabelle Davin, she upholds the excellence of this cru by combining time-honoured expertise, technical modernisation and a strong commitment to the environment.
The vineyard
The vineyard lies within the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation. The vines are planted on so-called Mindel gravel terraces, resting on a sandy-clay subsoil that ensures excellent water regulation. Farmed using sustainable practices, the estate holds High Environmental Value Level 3 certification, reflecting a viticulture that respects its ecosystem.
The vintage
The 2012 vintage was marked by capricious weather conditions, with sharp temperature swings and uneven rainfall. However, the return of mild weather from mid-July allowed the berries to begin a slow ripening process. This late cycle called for patience, pushing the manual harvest back to October in order to pick grapes at optimal ripeness.
Vinification and ageing
After rigorous optical sorting, the berries undergo a cold pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentation then takes place in temperature-controlled, truncated-cone stainless steel vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels. Finally, the wine is aged for 20 months in oak barrels, 85% of them new for this vintage, giving the wine its signature velvety texture.
Grape varieties
This vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (62%), Merlot (32%) and Petit Verdot (6%).
