A radiant and elegant Margaux from Château Malescot St Exupéry
The estate
Located in the renowned wine region of Bordeaux, Château Malescot St Exupéry was founded in 1616. In 1697, the estate was sold to Simon Malescot, advisor to King Louis XIV. In 1827, the Count of Saint-Exupéry, great-grandfather of the famous aviator, acquired the property. Over three centuries old and classified as a Third Growth, the estate boasts one of the finest terroirs of Margaux, an iconic appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. This historic estate covers forty-five hectares, of which twenty-eight form the core of production. Today, Jean-Luc Zuger is the current owner and manages the estate, continuing the commitment initiated by his family in the 1950s. Under his leadership, the estate has regained its prestige, producing wines that fully express the richness of their terroir with internationally recognized quality.
The vineyard
The vines enjoy a prime location within the Margaux appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. South-facing and overlooking the Gironde estuary, the terroir is mainly composed of Pyrenean gravel mixed with clay, chalk, and iron-rich deposits. This geology ensures excellent drainage while retaining freshness. The vineyard features a high planting density of ten thousand vines per hectare, with vines averaging thirty-five years of age, thus promoting berry concentration.
The vintage
The year was marked by demanding and relentless weather conditions. Despite these climatic challenges, the growing cycle was successfully completed, and the harvest took place under the best conditions between September 18 and 29. Alcohol: 14% vol.
Winemaking and aging
For this thirty-sixth vintage crafted with the help of consultant Michel Rolland, the harvest was carried out manually in small crates. Rigorous sorting was performed directly in the vineyard and then in the cellar. Alcoholic fermentation took place over a period of eight to twelve days in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel vats, using exclusively indigenous yeasts. The wine was then aged for fourteen to sixteen months in French oak barrels, 45% of which were new. The wine rested on its fine lees with bâtonnage operations and was bottled without fining or filtration.
Grape varieties
This blend is composed of 60% cabernet sauvignon, 34% merlot, and 6% petit verdot.
