Robert Parker

William Kelley

The 2021 Mazeyres bursts with aromas of cherries, blackberries and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's supple, vibrant and seamless. This is a strong effort that will offer a broad drinking window.

This forward-styled offering leads with effusive plum and cherry compote notes, while licorice and singed sandalwood accents underline the finish. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2029. 2,666 cases made, 200 cases imported.

Smells fresh and fruity, lively and clean with bright red berry fruit. High acidity with some liveliness, though paired with fairly toasted and woody tones. Tannins provide a sleek, smooth frame with concentration underneath.

This shows aromas of currants, bell peppers and licorice. It’s fresh and creamy with a medium body, fine tannins and an elegant, sleek finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Cask sample. Pure nose with lots of dark fruits. The palate is soft and rounded with fine tannins and earthy notes, medium weight and rather light on its feet, but well balanced and put together. (AC)

The 2021 Mazoyères has a light nose with brambly red fruit, tertiary scents and forest floor, nicely defined if just missing a bit of vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a sweet and candied opening and fine acidity, blueberry and cassis hints surfacing toward the floral finish. It has a brightness that is perhaps absent in some of its Pomerol peers.

The 2021 Château Mazeyres is based on 75% Merlot, with the rest Cabernet Franc (and a splash of Petit Verdot). It shows exotic red and blue fruits as well as the vintage’s fresh, sappy, floral character. It’s medium-bodied, with outstanding balance, fine tannins, and nicely integrated acidity. It’s very much in the floral, fresh, juicy style of the vintage and will offer plenty of pleasure over the next 10–12 years.

Weinwisser

Intensely red-berried bouquet, redcurrant compote, dried rose petals and cooled rosehip tea. On the palate, generous with a creamy texture, lively tension, a tightly knit tannic framework and medium body. The focused, finely aromatic finish shows red dried berries, juniper and a delicately brittle astringency, rounded off.

A smoked-earth rusticity marks the opening beats of this wine, with attractive waves of crushed raspberry and redcurrant fruit, and some light peppercorn and capsicum notes. Medium-term drinking, it has the estate’s signature, just in a lighter voice.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A blend of 72% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2021 Mazeyres has a deep garnet-purple color. It opens with damp soil, wild mushrooms, and vegetal scents, with a waft of kirsch in the background. The medium-bodied palate is certainly refreshing but lacks flavor and texture, with an herbal finish.

Le Figaro Vin

Floral and fruity notes give a reassuringly classic nose. The acidity is clearly present on the palate, lending it a virile stance, while its suppleness and airy character recall a feminine side. A tightrope act that will have to choose its direction—hopefully toward freshness and delicacy.

(organic) The wine shows a medium-intensity ruby color. The nose conveys tension and density, revealing notes of juicy morello cherry, wild strawberry, black plum, blackberry, a tangy touch of blueberry, as well as indulgent aromas of chocolate-covered cherry and raspberry coulis. There are also refreshing hints of blackcurrant bud, sweet tobacco, and fresh mint, along with an elegant touch of violet. The spicy and oaky notes are discreet and well integrated: notably licorice (with a hint of star anise in the background), nutmeg, and clove, combined with a sappy nuance, subtle minerality, and a toasted undertone. The palate is juicy, fruity, and gourmand, yet precise and complex. It delivers flavors of morello cherry, black plum, red cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry coulis, and crushed blackcurrant, allied to herbal freshness (peppermint, fresh tobacco), spicy touches (licorice, nutmeg, clove), and a refined roasted edge (toasty, coffee). The finish is persistent, juicy, and enveloping, driven by luscious fruit and a touch of dark chocolate with pleasant bitterness. The tannins are supple and fine. Lovely freshness and a chiselled, mouthwatering acidity on the finish.

Dark, intense color. The nose surprised me with its intensity and beautiful pure fruit. Delicate on the attack, flavorful mid-palate, with substance and, above all, excellent structure, the wine finishes with good length where nuances of fruit and flowers emerge. It’s superb and shows remarkable form for the vintage. Estate on the rise.

Terre de Vins

Very ripe, fresh and inviting nose, marked by a touch of licorice and menthol. A distinctly Mazeyres-like verticality stands out. The palate shows lovely precision—taut and chiselled—supported by a full, juicy core, beautifully complete between the mineral layer, the vivid fruit, the civilised tannins, and the candied-cherry aromatics.

Vinum

Fascinating, floral, with a Burgundian feel, red-fruited, with pronounced violet and licorice; sweet-fruited attack, lots of elegance, top-notch tannins, great harmony, herbal finish. A fresh Mazeyres that should show drinkability at every stage of its life.

Yves Beck

The freshness displayed by Mazeyres is obvious, perhaps even a touch too marked by its herbal edge, but the fruity nuances keep everything in balance. It seems we’ve learned to tame the vegetal side and, in the end, to turn it into a positive. On the palate, the wine underscores its finesse. It embraces its slender profile and is supported by its tannins, ideally backed by the acidic structure. A wine that still needs to settle and find its place, but the outlook is very promising.
