The 2017 Saint-Pierre (Pomerol) is virile and brooding, and yet all the elements come together in the glass. This is a powerful, dense and hearty Pomerol. Black cherry, plum, leather, smoke, spice, grilled herbs, tobacco and licorice infuse the 2017 with notable character and depth.

Flowers, licorice, wet earth and plummy fruits delivered in a medium-bodied, soft, polished manner. On the back end, you'll enjoy silky, ripe, earthy plums.

Rather dark colour with a youthful purple hue. Darker fruit, plum, blackberry, violet and some earthy notes. Good polish on the palate, a classic medium-bodied style with finely rounded tannins, digest dark fruit and a classic dose of freshness. Pure and long finish, a fine step up in quality this vintage.

Another elegant, finesse-driven Pomerol, the 2017 Chateau Saint-Pierre (Pomerol) offers a complex bouquet of black raspberries, red currants, floral incense, and spice. This gives way to a medium-bodied 2017 with silky tannins, a balanced, elegant, charming personality, and a great finish. It’s not massive, but it shines for its purity and finesse. Based on 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, aged in 50% new French oak, drink it any time over the coming 10–15 years.

This rare cru, from very well-situated parcels on the Pomerol plateau, offers wines whose depth and distinction are evident. Well structured, they need time, as exemplified by the excellent 2008 and 2009. Axel Pradel de Lavaux intends to go even further and reposition the flagship cru of the family stable (nine properties on the Right Bank) among the Pomerol elite; for several years he has been equipping himself with the technical means to do so. The bouquet of the 2017 seems quite open. It reveals notes of truffle, blackberry and chocolate, followed by hints of smoked bacon. Silky, flavorful character on the palate. A slender wine with velvety tannins, endowed with the charm of Pomerol and a pleasing freshness.

Delicate on entry and far more perfumed on the palate than the nose suggests, the wine is frankly delicious. Its body melts into a fine, silky texture from mid-palate through the finish. It ends with a normal length, without any tannic edges. Air will amplify its presence on the nose, revealing a pure, precise fruit character.
