The Precision and Structure of a Pommard Premier Cru

The Estate

The history of Domaine Comte Armand in Burgundy officially began in 1828, when the family added this celebrated vineyard to its estate. A pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture, the property now spans nine hectares. Currently run by Olivier Armand, a direct descendant of the founders, the estate carries on a tradition of excellence. With Jane Eyre's arrival as technical director, Comte Armand continues to produce wines that combine respect for the terroir with artisanal methods, further strengthening its reputation across the Côte de Beaune.

The Vineyard

Covering 5.23 hectares, the Clos des Épeneaux is a historic monopole located at the heart of the Pommard appellation. Resting on clay-limestone soils rich in iron oxide, this terroir benefits from a southeast-facing exposure and an altitude ranging from 250 to 300 meters. The vines, aged between 30 and 80 years, come from a massale selection and are cultivated according to biodynamic principles, including plowing with horses and the use of natural infusions.

The Vintage

The year 2023 stood out for its particularly mild weather conditions. After a favorable spring that allowed for good vegetative growth, the summer proved warm, punctuated by cool nights ideal for preserving the berries' acidity. Moderate, regular rainfall prevented any water stress, leading to an early autumn harvest under the best possible conditions.

Winemaking and Aging

For this Pommard 1er Cru "Clos des Epeneaux" Monopole 2023, the grapes are fully destemmed before undergoing cold maceration. Fermentation takes place with whole berries, with selective punching down for gentle extraction. As the vineyard is divided into four distinct plots, each is vinified separately. The wine is then aged in oak barrels, 50% of which are new, for 18 to 24 months. It is finally bottled without fining or filtration.

Grape Variety

100% Pinot Noir.
