Decanter

Gorgeous deep and juicy plum and blackberry aromas with subtle spice: a superlative aromatic expression. The best expression I recall from this estate en primeur, hats off for the spice, the velvety tannins, and the balance. A wine that is thirst quenching insofar as you have depth but also lots of tension and energy. Cooler clay soils certainly played a role in the success as did the judicious tannin extractions, with integrated tannins from the 35% new oak.

Flowers, black cherries, plums, espresso, and licorice nuances create the aromatics. The medium-bodied palate is elegant, fresh, sweet, fruity, and vibrant, so you can enjoy all of its luscious, rich, polished fruits, with their chocolate accent on release and for 15-20 years after that. Drink from 2028-2050. 92-94 Pts

Sweet blueberry and blackberry, mint leaf, underlying fresh acidity that is well handled and structured, but not entirely taking over. Vintage September 10 to 23. 3.7 pH. 35% new oak. Yield 26 hl/ha. Winemaker Denis Pomerede, consultant Thomas Duclos.

The bouquet is thrillingly clear-cut, especially in the way it connects notes of perfectly ripe black berries with hints of freshness expressed through peony, verbena and mint aromas. Smooth on the attack, the wine initially seems to take on a relaxed profile. But then powerful tannins, supported by a structuring acidity, step in to add dimension. The wine thus shows an assured momentum, moving from finesse to character via breadth. A precise, savory wine, enhanced by a structure focused on freshness and vitality.

Vinum

Plum fruit, smoky notes, a hint of oregano spice, cherries; approachable on the palate, with a slightly creamy texture, not especially powerful but well-balanced, with fine tannins and good length. Will be enjoyable early on.

Couvent des Jacobins: The excellence of a Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Emilion

The estate

Tucked away in the heart of the village of Saint-Émilion, sheltered from view, Couvent des Jacobins is a place steeped in history. Founded in the 13th century, it is one of the oldest witnesses to the region's winemaking tradition. A family property for generations, it has been led since 2010 by Xavier Jean, who is committed to preserving the soul and excellence of this emblematic estate.

The vineyard

The estate spans 10.7 hectares within the Saint-Emilion appellation. This terroir is spread across varied soils, ranging from the limestone plateau to clay-sandy and clay-limestone lands rich in iron deposits. The vines, between 8 and 61 years old, are planted at a high density of 7,000 vines per hectare. Cultivated according to the principles of organic farming (ECOCERT France certified), the vineyard delivered for this harvest a controlled yield of approximately 26 hl/ha.

Winemaking and aging

The manual harvest, carried out in small 10 kg crates, took place from September 10 to 17 for the Merlot, on September 19 for the Cabernet Franc, and concluded on September 23 with the Petit Verdot. After a rigorous double sorting of the berries, first in the vineyard and then in the cellar, Couvent des Jacobins 2025 benefits from an entirely gravity-fed vinification. Aging then extends over a period of 12 to 15 months. It is carried out 35% in new barrels and 65% in one-wine barrels, crafted from French oak sourced from the prestigious forests of Allier, Tronçais and Bertranges. Alcohol content: 14% vol.

Grape varieties

Merlot (82%), Cabernet Franc (12%), Petit Verdot (6%).
