Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Moulin-à-Vent "En Mortperay" 2023 Domaine A.F. Gros

Tasting

Colour
This Vin de France reveals a beautiful red colour.

Nose
Initially reserved, the bouquet opens up with aeration to reveal notes of ripe red fruits such as cherry and strawberry. It then gains complexity with floral touches of crushed violet and wild herbs, along with hints of pepper, spice, leather and undergrowth.

Palate
Generous and energetic, the palate offers a full and well-defined structure. The silky tannins are perfectly balanced by a mineral and saline framework. The finish stands out for its lovely length.

Food and wine pairing

A true food-friendly wine, this cuvée pairs wonderfully with roasted poultry, white meats, or dishes with Mediterranean accents flavoured with thyme and rosemary. It will also make an ideal accompaniment to mushroom dishes, charcuterie, spiced terrines or fresh cheeses with good intensity.

Service and storage

This Moulin-à-Vent "En Mortperay" 2023 will reveal its full aromatic potential if enjoyed in its youth, and can be cellared for drinking until around 2028.

Other characteristics

This wine has an alcohol content of 13.5%.

The unique expression of a Beaujolais terroir by Domaine A.F. Gros

The estate

Founded in 1988 by Anne-Françoise Gros and her husband François Parent, Domaine A.F. Gros has historically been based in Pommard, in Burgundy. Now headed by Anne-Françoise, the estate is seeing its future secured by her children: Caroline in sales and Mathias in winemaking. With a vineyard covering around ten hectares, the estate expanded into Beaujolais in 2017. It stands out for its approach combining respect for Burgundian traditions with innovative winemaking methods, resulting in wines of great elegance.

The vineyard

The grapes for this Moulin-à-Vent come from the lieu-dit "En Mortperay", a plot covering between 3.6 and 3.8 hectares. The vines benefit from an ideal south-east exposure and thrive on granitic and sandy soils, lending a unique minerality. The vineyard is managed according to the principles of integrated pest management and sustainable viticulture, notably using pheromone-based mating disruption to protect the vines in an environmentally friendly way.

The vintage

2023 offered favourable weather conditions, allowing optimal phenolic ripeness to be achieved. Harvesting took place in early September, resulting in normal yields, unlike subsequent years marked by weather-related setbacks.

Winemaking and aging

For this Moulin-à-Vent "En Mortperay" 2023, the hand-harvested berries are transported in refrigerated trucks to preserve their freshness. A rigorous double sorting is carried out before tank filling. Fermentation takes place with whole bunches under controlled temperature, with gentle punching down towards the end of maceration. Aging lasts nine months, split equally between 5,000-litre wooden vats and 228-litre Burgundian barrels. The final blend then rests for one month in stainless steel tanks before bottling.

Grape variety

100% Gamay.
